Aggies Dominate Blue Hens in Conference USA Road Victory
NEWARK, Del. (Interstat) — In a game defined by blistering offensive efficiency and a dominant opening act, the New Mexico State Aggies cruised to a 97-68 victory over the Delaware Blue Hens in a Conference USA men’s basketball matchup Saturday at Bob Carpenter Center.
The Aggies, who improved to 10-7 overall, left little doubt from the outset, constructing a 19-point halftime lead they would never relinquish. New Mexico State shot a scorching 57.1% from the field for the game, including 50% from three-point range, while committing a mere four turnovers. Their offensive rating of 148.7 points per 100 possessions underscored a performance of remarkable precision.
The most important part of the game was the first-half onslaught that effectively decided the contest. New Mexico State established immediate control, opening the game on a 12-2 run fueled by early baskets from Julius Mims and a trio of three-pointers. The Aggies’ ball movement was sharp, and their shot selection was nearly flawless, building a 49-30 lead by intermission. Delaware, which fell to 5-13, could not match the Aggies’ firepower or pace, shooting just 40.7% in the first half and struggling to generate consistent stops.
Delaware’s efforts were led by Tyler Houser, a 6-foot-9 forward from Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, who scored 25 points. Christian Bliss, a guard from Queens, New York, added 19 points and five assists for the Blue Hens. Justyn Fernandez contributed 14 points.
But New Mexico State’s attack was a balanced and relentless machine. Jemel Jones of Chicago led the Aggies with 19 points and five assists. He was one of five Aggies to score in double figures, joined by Jayland Randall (15 points), Elijah Elliott (14), Anthony Wrzeszcz (14), and Julius Mims (13). The Aggies’ bench outscored Delaware’s reserves 35-8, with Wrzeszcz hitting four of his team’s 14 three-pointers.
The second half saw the Aggies maintain their offensive rhythm, answering any modest Delaware push with a scoring burst. A 12-4 run by New Mexico State midway through the final period, capped by a Wrzeszcz three-pointer and a Mims alley-oop, extended the lead to 78-50 and removed any lingering suspense.
New Mexico State’s defense was equally disruptive, recording five steals and three blocks while holding a 34-20 advantage in points in the paint. The Aggies also capitalized on Delaware’s mistakes, scoring 10 points off six Blue Hens turnovers.
The game’s total of 165 points sailed over the pregame over/under line of 135.5. New Mexico State, which had been a 5-point favorite according to the spread, easily covered. Interstat’s ELO system had given the Aggies a 59.4% probability to win.
The victory snapped a two-game skid for New Mexico State, which had suffered close losses to Liberty and Middle Tennessee in its previous two outings. Delaware has now lost three consecutive games, including a one-point defeat to UTEP on Thursday.
New Mexico State will host Missouri State next Thursday. Delaware travels to face Liberty next Saturday. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Las Cruces, New Mexico, on Jan. 28.
Attendance at the Bob Carpenter Center was 2,560.
