Texas Tech Routs New Orleans Behind Toppin’s Double-Double
LUBBOCK, Texas (Interstat) — In a commanding display of home-court dominance, the Texas Tech Red Raiders overwhelmed the New Orleans Privateers 82-50 in a non-conference men’s basketball game Wednesday afternoon before a crowd of 10,441 at United Spirit Arena.
The Red Raiders, improving to 5-2, never trailed, opening the game on a 7-0 run and maintaining a double-digit lead for the final 35 minutes. The Privateers, who fell to 3-5, struggled to find any offensive rhythm against a stifling Texas Tech defense.
Texas Tech’s victory was built on a foundation of overwhelming physicality and efficient shooting. The Red Raiders connected on 11 of 24 attempts from 3-point range, a 45.8 percent clip, while New Orleans managed just 2 of 15 from beyond the arc. The Red Raiders also dominated the glass, hauling in 16 offensive rebounds that led to numerous second-chance opportunities, compared to just four for the Privateers.
JT Toppin, a 6-foot-9 forward from Dallas, was the engine for Texas Tech, delivering a monstrous double-double with 19 points and 16 rebounds in 30 minutes of action. His presence in the paint was felt on both ends, adding two blocks. He was complemented perfectly by guard Christian Anderson of Atlanta, who poured in a game-high 23 points and dished out five assists.
The Red Raiders’ defensive length, evidenced by seven total team blocks, consistently disrupted New Orleans’ offensive sets. Luke Bamgboye, a 6-foot-10 freshman from London, England, was a particular menace, contributing 13 points, five rebounds, four assists and four blocks. LeJuan Watts added 12 points and eight rebounds, while Donovan Atwell chipped in 13 points.
The game’s trajectory was set from the opening tip. Bamgboye won the jump ball, leading to a Toppin hook shot just 13 seconds into the contest. An Anderson 3-pointer and another Toppin layup quickly made it 7-0, forcing an early New Orleans timeout.
The Privateers showed brief signs of life, with a dunk from Churchill Abass and a transition dunk from Tavaj Cope cutting the deficit to 12-10 midway through the first half. However, Texas Tech responded with a decisive 15-2 run, fueled by two more 3-pointers from Anderson and one from Atwell, to push the lead to 27-12 and effectively put the game out of reach.
New Orleans was led by Jakevion Buckley of Shelbyville, Texas, who scored 16 points. Mathok Majok, the 7-foot-4 center from Wau, South Sudan, provided a bright spot off the bench with nine points and six rebounds in just 11 minutes.
The Privateers’ offensive woes were stark. They committed 17 turnovers, shot just 37 percent from the field and recorded an offensive rating of 68.3 points per 100 possessions. Texas Tech, by contrast, capitalized on those mistakes, scoring 14 points off turnovers and operating with an offensive rating of 114.1.
After taking a 41-34 lead into halftime, the Red Raiders extinguished any hope of a New Orleans comeback by holding the Privateers to just 16 points in the second half, matching their first-half output of 41 points to cruise to the 32-point victory.
The game’s final score fell well below the pregame over/under line of 155. Texas Tech had been installed as a 26-point favorite and easily covered the spread.
New Orleans will look to rebound on the road against Memphis on Dec. 3. Texas Tech returns to action at home against Wyoming on Nov. 30.
