Western Carolina Outlasts UNC Asheville in Back-and-Forth Contest

CULLOWHEE, N.C. (Interstat) — In a back-and-forth contest defined by offensive rebounds and trips to the free-throw line, Western Carolina outlasted UNC Asheville for an 80-73 victory in a non-conference men’s basketball game Wednesday night at a raucous Ramsey Center.

A career-high 29 points from guard Cord Stansberry, including four critical free throws in the final second, propelled the Catamounts to their second consecutive win, improving their record to 3-2. The Bulldogs, despite a valiant 22-point effort from forward Toyaz Solomon, fell to 2-3 with the road loss.

The game was a tale of contrasting efficiencies. While UNC Asheville shot a sharp 50 percent from the field and an even more impressive 50 percent from three-point range, their inability to capitalize at the charity stripe and secure defensive rebounds proved decisive. The Bulldogs converted just 12 of their 23 free-throw attempts. Western Carolina, conversely, struggled from the floor at 42 percent and made only 5 of 19 three-point attempts, but dominated the glass and lived at the line, making 23 of 29 free throws.

The Catamounts’ relentless work on the offensive boards was the game’s most glaring statistical disparity. Western Carolina hauled in 15 offensive rebounds, leading to a 22-7 advantage in second-chance points and a commanding 36-22 edge in points in the paint. They also capitalized more effectively on mistakes, scoring 22 points off turnovers compared to the Bulldogs’ 11.

The first half set the tone for the tightly contested battle. Western Carolina held a narrow 41-38 lead at the break, with Stansberry scoring 12 of his points before halftime. The Bulldogs kept pace behind the inside presence of Solomon and the outside shooting of Kameron Taylor, who finished with 17 points.

The second half saw neither team able to build a substantial lead. UNC Asheville guard Justin Wright, who tallied 12 points and six assists, hit a trio of three-pointers to keep the Bulldogs within striking distance. Every time the Catamounts threatened to pull away, a response from Asheville, often from Solomon or Taylor, would close the gap.

With just over a minute to play and Western Carolina clinging to a 69-67 lead, the Bulldogs had opportunities to tie or take the lead. A critical turnover by Solomon, however, led to a fast-break layup by Tahlan Pettway, extending the Catamounts’ advantage to four points with 1:52 remaining.

Solomon hit a deep three-pointer with 21 seconds left to bring UNC Asheville within a single possession at 73-70, but Stansberry iced the game in the final second. After a technical foul was assessed to the UNC Asheville bench, Stansberry calmly sank two free throws. Following another turnover on the ensuing inbounds play, he was fouled again and made two more, sealing the 80-73 final.

For Western Carolina, Pettway provided a vital spark off the bench with 12 points. Tidjiane Dioumassi added nine points, and the frontcourt duo of Abdulai Fanta Kabba and Marcus Kell combined for 16 points and a significant number of the team’s offensive rebounds.

For the Bulldogs, DJ Patrick scored eight points and Jakel Powell added six points off the bench, but the team’s overall struggles from the free-throw line and on the defensive glass ultimately outweighed their efficient shooting performance.

Western Carolina looks to extend its winning streak on the road Saturday at Lipscomb. UNC Asheville returns home to face Tennessee State next Tuesday.
