Arkansas Holds Off Samford in Tight Non-Conference Contest
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (Interstat) — In a game that defied pregame projections, the Arkansas Razorbacks narrowly escaped an upset bid by the Samford Bulldogs, securing a 79-75 victory in a non-conference men’s basketball thriller Friday night before a crowd of 19,200 at a raucous Bud Walton Arena.
The Razorbacks, heavily favored entering the contest, saw a commanding 10-point halftime lead evaporate in the second half before making crucial plays in the final minute to improve their record to 3-1. Samford, which fought back from a 45-35 halftime deficit, fell to 2-2 with the hard-fought road loss.
The game was a tale of two halves, defined by contrasting styles. Arkansas built its initial lead on the strength of a blistering transition game, outscoring Samford 22-9 in fastbreak points. The Razorbacks also capitalized on their opportunities at the free-throw line, making 17 of 22 attempts, a critical factor in the tight contest. Samford, meanwhile, stayed competitive by connecting from long range, hitting 10 three-pointers to Arkansas’ six, and by committing one less turnover.
The second half belonged to the Bulldogs, who methodically chipped away at the Arkansas advantage. A more deliberate pace and effective outside shooting allowed Samford to tie the game on multiple occasions, turning the final minutes into a possession-by-possession battle.
With the game hanging in the balance, Arkansas’ star freshmen delivered. Meleek Thomas, a 6-foot-5 guard from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, provided an all-around effort, leading the Razorbacks with 17 points and eight rebounds while adding four assists. His backcourt partner, Darius Acuff Jr. from Detroit, Michigan, was the game’s high scorer, pouring in 20 points and dishing out five assists, including several key baskets down the stretch.
The Razorbacks also received a significant contribution from forward Trevon Brazile. The 6-foot-10 junior from Springfield, Missouri, scored 15 points and pulled down seven rebounds, using his size to anchor the Arkansas frontcourt.
Samford’s effort was led by a balanced offensive attack. Cade Norris, a 6-foot-4 guard from Hilliard, Ohio, tallied 15 points, six rebounds and four assists. Zion Willburn, a reserve guard from Richmond, California, provided a crucial spark off the bench, scoring all 15 of his points in the first half to keep the Bulldogs within striking distance. Dylan Faulkner, a 6-foot-9 forward from Calhoun, Georgia, added 13 points and six rebounds, while Jadin Booth contributed 14 points.
The contest came down to the final seconds. After Acuff hit a floating jumper to put Arkansas up 75-73, Samford’s Dylan Faulkner answered with a powerful dunk off an assist from Norris to tie the game with just over three minutes remaining.
Acuff then put the Razorbacks ahead for good with another floating jumper. Following a defensive stop, Arkansas worked the clock and Thomas was fouled, sinking two clutch free throws to extend the lead to four points with under a minute to play. Samford had a chance to tie in the final seconds, but a contested three-point attempt missed its mark, allowing Arkansas to secure the victory.
The game was a statistical oddity, with both teams finishing with an identical 72 possessions. Arkansas’ offensive efficiency proved slightly superior, as they scored 79 points for an offensive rating of 109.0, compared to Samford’s 104.5. The teams were also dead even in offensive rebounds, with nine apiece, and assists and steals, with five each.
The win keeps Arkansas undefeated at home this season, while Samford will look to rebound quickly as they travel to face Central Arkansas on Sunday. The Razorbacks will continue their homestand Tuesday against Winthrop.
