UAB at North Carolina State
RALEIGH, N.C. (Interstat) — North Carolina State showcased its offensive firepower in a decisive 94-70 victory over the UAB Blazers in a non-conference men’s basketball game Friday night at a packed Lenovo Center.
The Wolfpack improved to 2-0 on the young season, while the Blazers evened their record at 1-1.
From the opening tip, North Carolina State’s efficiency was the story of the game. The Wolfpack shot 54 percent from the floor, connecting on 33 of 61 field goal attempts, and were potent from beyond the arc, making 10 of 30 three-pointers. They also capitalized at the free-throw line, converting 18 of 22 attempts.
UAB struggled to find its shooting rhythm, making just 29 of 71 shots for a 41 percent rate. The Blazers’ long-distance shooting was particularly cold, as they hit only 4 of 25 attempts from three-point range. They also went 8 for 14 from the free-throw line.
The Wolfpack’s offensive rating of 124.6 on 75 possessions dwarfed UAB’s mark of 92.5 on 76 possessions, underscoring the disparity in offensive execution.
North Carolina State’s attack was fueled by a balanced and explosive scoring effort. Quadir Copeland, a 6-foot-6 guard from Philadelphia, led all scorers with 18 points and added five assists in just 10 minutes of play. Paul McNeil Jr. also scored 18 points, while Darrion Williams of Sacramento, California, contributed 14 points, four rebounds and four assists. Tre Holloman rounded out the high-scoring quartet with 14 points and five assists.
Despite the lopsided score, UAB competed hard on the glass, outrebounding the Wolfpack 15-10 on the offensive end. Daniel Rivera, a 6-foot-7 forward from San Juan, Puerto Rico, posted a strong line for the Blazers with 12 points, seven rebounds and a block. Chance Westry of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and Jacob Meyer of Covington, Kentucky, each added 14 points for UAB.
The Wolfpack never trailed, building a double-digit lead in the first half and maintaining control throughout the second period. The game’s final score of 164 fell just under the pregame over/under line of 163.5. North Carolina State entered the contest as a 16-point favorite, a margin they comfortably covered.
North Carolina State looks to continue its winning streak when it hosts UNC Greensboro on Wednesday. UAB returns home to face Alabama State on Tuesday.
