Texas State at Arkansas State
JONESBORO, Ark. (Interstat) — A Sun Belt Conference rematch awaits Saturday when the Arkansas State Red Wolves host the Texas State Bobcats at Convocation Center.
Arkansas State (11-5, 2-1 Sun Belt) enters with momentum after an 86-74 home victory over Troy on Wednesday. The Red Wolves’ backcourt duo of Chandler Jackson (17 points) and Christian Harmon (18 points) powered the win. Jackson, a key player to watch, is averaging 16.3 points over his last three games and dished out eight assists in the first meeting with Texas State.
The Red Wolves dominated that Dec. 17 matchup in San Marcos, Texas, winning 89-70. They shot 54% from the field and forced 16 Bobcats turnovers.
Texas State (9-8, 1-3) looks to avenge that loss and rebound from a tough 80-70 overtime defeat at Southern Mississippi on Thursday. Despite the loss, guard Kaden Gumbs continued his strong play with 15 points. Gumbs, the Bobcats’ player to watch, nearly posted a triple-double in a win over Louisiana-Monroe last week with 12 points, six rebounds and seven assists.
The Bobcats’ conference start has been uneven, with the win over ULM bookended by double-digit losses to Troy and Southern Miss. Slowing Jackson and improving ball security will be critical concerns for a Texas State team that allowed 89 points to Arkansas State last month.
Arkansas State has won three of its last four and boasts a potent offense, averaging 84 points per game at home this season. Texas State averages 73.2 points on the road.
The game tips off at 3:15 p.m. CST Saturday as both teams navigate the early conference schedule. Following this game, Arkansas State begins a two-game road swing at South Alabama, while Texas State returns home to host Louisiana-Lafayette on Jan. 14.
