Arkansas State Edges Texas State in Sun Belt Thriller
JONESBORO, Ark. (Interstat) — In a game defined by relentless physicality and a staggering 19 offensive rebounds for the home team, Arkansas State survived a furious second-half rally from Texas State to escape with an 83-82 victory in a Sun Belt Conference men’s basketball thriller on Saturday afternoon at Convocation Center.
A crowd of 4,059 watched as the Red Wolves squandered nearly all of a 13-point second-half lead before making critical free throws in the final seconds to improve to 12-5 overall. The Bobcats, who lost to Arkansas State by 19 points just three weeks prior, fell to 9-9 with the heartbreaking defeat, their second consecutive loss.
The game’s pivotal sequence unfolded in the final 10 seconds. Trailing by one, Texas State’s Franck Emmou missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer from the top of the key. Robert Fields secured the offensive rebound for the Bobcats and was fouled on the put-back attempt with less than a second remaining. With the game hanging in the balance, Fields missed the first free throw. After an Arkansas State timeout intended to ice him, he deliberately missed the second attempt, but the Red Wolves controlled the ensuing scramble as time expired.
Arkansas State built its winning margin almost exclusively at the free-throw line and on the glass. The Red Wolves attempted 32 free throws, making 25, while Texas State went 16 for 19. More decisively, Arkansas State’s 19 offensive rebounds led to 21 second-chance points and allowed them to attempt 77 field goals despite turning the ball over 17 times. Texas State, by contrast, had only eight offensive boards.
The Bobcats were more efficient from the field, shooting 52.5% on 32-of-61 shooting, but their inability to secure defensive rebounds and a paltry 2-for-11 performance from 3-point range proved costly. Arkansas State shot just 40.6% overall but compensated with volume, fueled by their extra possessions.
Jalen Hampton and Chandler Jackson were instrumental for Arkansas State. Hampton, a 6-foot-7 forward from St. Louis, posted a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds in 27 minutes, anchoring the interior effort. Jackson, a guard from Memphis, scored 16 points, including several key free throws down the stretch, and added four assists.
Texas State was led by a dominant performance from DJ Hall. The 6-foot-7 forward from Plano, Texas, played 35 minutes and recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, battling tirelessly inside against Arkansas State’s relentless frontcourt. Kyndall Davis added 10 points and six rebounds, while Jalen Bolden chipped in 12 points.
The first half was a sloppy, back-and-forth affair featuring 18 combined turnovers. Arkansas State used a 10-2 run late in the period, capped by a Matt Hayman 3-pointer and two Chandler Jackson free throws, to take a 43-37 lead into halftime. Hayman finished with 14 points.
The Red Wolves extended their lead to 60-47 with 12:08 remaining in the game after a TJ Caldwell 3-pointer. Texas State, however, refused to fold. The Bobcats methodically chipped away, leveraging their efficient half-court offense. A driving layup by Jalen Bolden with 1:15 left cut the deficit to 81-79.
After a Makai Willis layup for Texas State made it 81-81 with 43 seconds left, Jackson was fouled and made two free throws to put Arkansas State back up 83-81 with 22 seconds remaining. Bolden was then fouled on a drive and made one of two free throws with 11 seconds left, setting the stage for the frantic final possession and Fields’ fateful trip to the line.
The win keeps Arkansas State near the top of the Sun Belt standings, while Texas State continues its search for consistency in conference play. According to pregame analytics from Interstat, Arkansas State held a 91.4% probability to win and was favored by 11.5 points. The combined score of 165 points surpassed the over/under line of 155.5.
Texas State returns home to face Louisiana-Lafayette on Wednesday. Arkansas State begins a two-game road trip at South Alabama on Thursday.
