Wofford at Auburn
AUBURN, Ala. (Interstat) — The Auburn Tigers used a dominant second-half performance to pull away from the Wofford Terriers for a 93-62 victory in a non-conference men’s basketball game Tuesday night at a raucous Auburn Arena.
Auburn remained undefeated on the young season, improving to 3-0, while Wofford fell to 1-2.
The game was competitive for a half, with the Tigers taking a 40-22 lead into the break. The second half, however, belonged entirely to the home team. Auburn erupted for 53 points after halftime, nearly matching Wofford’s total game output, to turn a close contest into a lopsided affair.
The Tigers’ offensive efficiency was the story of the game. Auburn scored 93 points on 75 possessions, translating to a blistering offensive rating of 124.7. They shot 51 percent from the field, connecting on 36 of 71 attempts, and were a solid 9 of 27 from beyond the arc. Wofford, by contrast, managed an offensive rating of just 85.2, shooting 39 percent from the floor and a frigid 24 percent from three-point range.
Auburn’s defense was equally impactful, amassing 11 steals and nine blocks. They also controlled the glass, pulling down 16 offensive rebounds to Wofford’s six, which led to numerous second-chance opportunities.
Keyshawn Hall led a balanced and potent Auburn attack with 20 points, six assists and three blocks. Elyjah Freeman was equally impressive, scoring 21 points and adding three assists. Kevin Overton provided a significant spark off the bench with 13 points, all of which came in the second half.
Wofford was led by Chace Watley’s 11 points and Kahmare Holmes’ 10 points. Maximo Ortega provided a bright spot off the Terriers’ bench, scoring nine points in just 12 minutes of action.
Auburn never trailed, opening the scoring on a tip-in dunk by Filip Jovic just 21 seconds into the game. Wofford kept pace early, with a three-pointer from Holmes tying the game at 3-3, but the Tigers steadily built their lead throughout the first half.
The Tigers’ decisive run came early in the second period. After Wofford cut the lead to 15, Auburn went on a 14-4 surge, capped by a three-pointer from Overton, to extend their advantage to 63-41 and effectively put the game out of reach. The Tigers’ lead ballooned to as many as 31 points in the final minutes.
A crowd of 9,121 watched as the Tigers outperformed pregame expectations, easily covering the 25-point spread. The total score of 155 also went over the projected over/under line of 152.5.
Auburn now looks ahead to a major early-season test, facing Houston in Birmingham, Alabama, on Sunday. Wofford will continue its road trip at Bellarmine on Saturday.
