Auburn Overpowers Wofford in Home Opener Behind Hall, Freeman

AUBURN, Ala. (Interstat) — The Auburn Tigers used a dominant second-half performance to pull away from the Wofford Terriers for a 93-62 victory in a non-conference men’s basketball game Tuesday night at a raucous Auburn Arena.

A crowd of 9,121 watched the Tigers improve to 3-0 on the young season, while the Terriers fell to 1-2.

The game was competitive for much of the first half, with Wofford’s Kahmare Holmes connecting on an early 3-pointer to give his team a brief lead. Auburn responded with an inside score from Filip Jovic and a dunk from Elyjah Freeman to quickly seize control. The teams traded baskets, and a 3-pointer from Wofford’s Nils Machowski kept the Terriers within two points early.

Auburn began to create separation midway through the first period, fueled by the play of Keyshawn Hall and Freeman. Hall’s driving layup and subsequent free throw capped a personal three-point play, and Freeman’s steady scoring helped the Tigers build a double-digit lead. Despite a resilient effort from Wofford, which saw contributions from Chace Watley and Brian Sumpter, Auburn took a 40-22 lead into halftime.

Any hopes of a Wofford comeback were swiftly extinguished as the Tigers exploded out of the locker room. Auburn opened the second half on a 15-5 run, with Hall and Freeman continuing their offensive onslaught. A 3-pointer from Kevin Overton pushed the Auburn lead to 30 points, effectively putting the game out of reach as the Tigers’ depth and athleticism proved too much for the visiting Terriers.

Auburn’s offense operated with ruthless efficiency, scoring 93 points on 75 possessions for an offensive rating of 124.7. The Tigers shot 51 percent from the field, connecting on 36 of 71 attempts. Defensively, they were equally formidable, holding Wofford to a 38.7 shooting percentage and an offensive rating of just 85.2. The Tigers also dominated the glass, out-rebounding Wofford 16-6 on the offensive end, leading to numerous second-chance points.

Hall, a 6-foot-7 forward from Cleveland, Ohio, led all scorers with 20 points, adding six assists and three blocks in 27 minutes of action. Freeman, a 6-foot-8 guard from Palm Beach, Florida, was equally impressive, scoring 21 points and dishing out three assists. Overton, a 6-foot-5 guard from Oklahoma City, provided a significant spark off the bench with 13 points.

Wofford was led by Watley, who scored 11 points off the bench. Holmes finished with 10 points and two assists. Maximo Ortega provided a bright spot in the second half, scoring nine points in just 12 minutes of play.

The game’s final margin of 31 points exceeded the pregame spread, which had installed Auburn as a 25-point favorite. The combined score of 155 points fell under the over/under line of 152.5.

Auburn now looks ahead to a major early-season test, traveling to face Houston in Birmingham, Alabama, on Sunday. Wofford will continue its road swing with a game at Bellarmine on Saturday.
