Oakland at Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Interstat) — In a game that was far more competitive than the pregame projections suggested, the Purdue Boilermakers used a dominant second-half performance to pull away from the Oakland Golden Grizzlies for an 87-77 victory in a non-conference men’s NCAA Division I basketball game Friday night.

A sold-out crowd of 14,876 at Mackey Arena watched as the Golden Grizzlies, a 30.5-point underdog, battled the heavily favored Boilermakers to a 35-35 stalemate at halftime. However, Purdue’s offensive efficiency and ability to capitalize on mistakes proved decisive after the break, outscoring Oakland 52-42 in the second half.

The game turned on Purdue’s ability to convert Oakland’s miscues into points. The Boilermakers scored 18 points off just eight Golden Grizzlies turnovers, while Oakland managed only five points off Purdue’s five giveaways. This disparity in points off turnovers was a critical factor in the final outcome.

Ziare Wells was the standout performer for Oakland, nearly willing his team to an upset. The 6-foot-6 guard from Queens Village, New York, logged 36 minutes and poured in a game-high 21 points while pulling down 12 rebounds for a double-double.

Purdue’s victory was a product of balanced scoring and superior shot-making from beyond the arc. The Boilermakers connected on 13 of 35 attempts from 3-point range, while Oakland finished 8 of 26. Both teams took 68 total field goal attempts, but Purdue’s success from deep was a key differentiator.

Braden Smith orchestrated the Purdue offense masterfully. The 6-foot point guard from Westfield, Indiana, finished with 20 points, seven rebounds and nine assists, coming just shy of a double-double. His backcourt mate, Fletcher Loyer, added 15 points.

Inside, Oscar Cluff was a force for the Boilermakers. The 6-foot-11 center from the Sunshine Coast, Australia, recorded 14 points, nine rebounds and four blocks, anchoring Purdue’s defense which tallied seven total blocks. Jack Benter also chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds.

For Oakland, Nassim Mashhour of Dearborn, Michigan, scored 15 points, while Tuburu Naivalurua of Sydney, Australia, and Brody Robinson of Houston, Texas, each added 11. Naivalurua also contributed seven rebounds, four assists and two blocks.

Despite the loss, Oakland controlled the paint, outscoring Purdue 40 to 32, and matched the Boilermakers with 10 fastbreak points. However, Purdue’s offensive rating of 122.3 on 71 possessions ultimately outpaced Oakland’s rating of 107.4 on 72 possessions.

With the win, Purdue improves to 2-0 on the young season, following a season-opening victory over Evansville. Oakland falls to 0-2 after opening its campaign with a road loss at Michigan.

Purdue next travels to face Alabama on Thursday, November 13. Oakland continues a challenging early schedule with a road game at Houston on Wednesday, November 12.
