Akron Dominates Milwaukee in Convincing Home Victory
AKRON, Ohio (Interstat) — In a commanding display of offensive firepower and defensive pressure, the Akron Zips defeated the Milwaukee Panthers 105-81 in a non-conference men’s basketball game Saturday night at James A. Rhodes Arena.
A crowd of 1,697 watched as the Zips (6-2) never trailed, overwhelming the Panthers (3-5) from the opening tip and leading by double digits for nearly the entire contest. Akron’s dominance was built on a blistering first-half performance, where they raced out to a 52-39 lead at the break and never looked back, maintaining their intensity to add 53 more points in the second half.
The game was effectively decided by Akron’s efficiency in the paint and their ability to capitalize on Milwaukee’s mistakes. The Zips outscored the Panthers 50-32 in the paint and converted 19 Milwaukee turnovers into 19 points, while the Panthers managed 16 points off 19 Akron turnovers. Akron’s transition game was also a key factor, outrunning Milwaukee 22-13 in fastbreak points.
Akron’s offense was a balanced and relentless attack, led by a standout performance from Amani Lyles. The 6-foot-7 forward from Columbus, Ohio, scored a game-high 25 points and dished out five assists in just 25 minutes of action, setting the tone for the Zips’ offensive onslaught.
He was complemented by a double-double from point guard Tavari Johnson. The 5-foot-11 guard from La Grange Park, Illinois, orchestrated the offense with precision, tallying 11 points and 11 assists. Evan Mahaffey, a 6-foot-6 guard from Cincinnati, Ohio, provided a significant spark with 15 points, four assists and a block.
The Zips’ depth was on full display as six players finished in double figures. Shammah Scott contributed 14 points, while Sharron Young and Eric Mahaffey each added 11 points. Halil Barre, a 6-foot-9 presence from Cotonou, Benin, anchored the defense with three blocks and chipped in 10 points.
Milwaukee, which fell to 3-5 with the loss, was led by Danilo Jovanovich. The 6-foot-8 forward from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, fought hard for a team-high 21 points and recorded two blocks in 34 minutes. Stevie Elam provided a scoring punch off the bench with 17 points, and Seth Hubbard added 15 points and five assists for the Panthers.
Despite the efforts of Jovanovich and Elam, the Panthers struggled to find consistent offensive rhythm against Akron’s swarming defense and could not slow down the Zips’ multifaceted scoring attack. The loss continued a difficult early-season stretch for Milwaukee, which has now dropped four of its last five games after a season-opening victory.
The victory extends Akron’s strong start to the season, improving their record to 6-2 as they head into the heart of their non-conference schedule. The Zips have now won five of their last six games, with their only loss in that span coming in a close contest against Yale.
Milwaukee will look to regroup and return to the win column when they host Robert Morris on Dec. 6. Akron’s next test comes at home against Bucknell on Dec. 3 before hitting the road to face Tulane on Dec. 6.
