Alabama State Routs IU Indy Behind Explosive First Half

AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (Interstat) — In a high-octane offensive showcase, the Alabama State Hornets overpowered the IU Indy Jaguars 101-80 in a non-conference men’s basketball game Friday afternoon at Clune Arena.

The Hornets, improving to 3-3 overall, seized control of the contest with a dominant first-half performance, building a substantial lead that the Jaguars could not overcome. Alabama State’s offense was firing on all cylinders from the opening tip, scoring 59 points before halftime. IU Indy, which fell to 2-5, kept pace early but was ultimately overwhelmed by the Hornets’ sustained offensive pressure.

R’Chaun King was the standout performer for Alabama State, pouring in a game-high 21 points and grabbing five rebounds. His efficiency in the paint was a cornerstone of the Hornets’ attack. He was complemented by a dynamic backcourt duo of Asjon Anderson and Micah Simpson, who orchestrated the offense with precision. Anderson finished with 19 points and seven assists, while Simpson flirted with a triple-double, posting 17 points, nine assists and six rebounds.

The Hornets’ defensive presence was anchored by Jerquarius Stanback, who recorded 10 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots, altering numerous attempts at the rim.

For the visiting Jaguars, a balanced effort was led by Finley Woodward, who filled the stat sheet with eight points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Kameron Tinsley provided a significant scoring punch off the bench, leading IU Indy with 15 points, including three shots from beyond the arc, while also contributing five assists.

The game’s trajectory was set early. After IU Indy’s Kyler D’Augustino opened the scoring with a jump shot, Alabama State quickly established its rhythm. A 13-0 run midway through the first half, capped by a Tyler Mason jump shot, gave the Hornets a 15-4 lead and forced an early IU Indy timeout. The Jaguars chipped away, with a Finley Woodward layup and a three-pointer from Kameron Tinsley cutting the deficit, but they could never draw even.

Alabama State consistently answered every IU Indy push. When the Jaguars pulled within nine points late in the first half, the Hornets responded with a flurry, including a Tyler Byrd alley-oop dunk and a Micah Simpson three-pointer, to take a commanding 59-45 lead into the locker room.

The second half saw Alabama State maintain its offensive efficiency, preventing any notion of a Jaguar comeback. The Hornets’ lead ballooned to as many as 23 points as they continued to share the ball, resulting in high-percentage shots. A late layup from R’Chaun King, assisted by Jerquarius Stanback, pushed Alabama State past the century mark, cementing the decisive victory.

The game was part of a multi-team event at the Air Force Academy. IU Indy will look to rebound quickly as they remain in Colorado to face the Air Force Academy on Sunday. Alabama State’s next contest is also against SIU Edwardsville at Clune Arena on Sunday before embarking on a lengthy road trip.
