Arizona Edges Connecticut in Defensive Battle

HARTFORD, Conn. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by grit and rebounding, the Arizona Wildcats remained undefeated, edging the Connecticut Huskies 71-67 in a marquee non-conference men’s basketball showdown Wednesday night before a crowd of 10,244 at the XL Center.

The game, a stark contrast to the offensive fireworks many anticipated, was won not with flashy shooting but with relentless effort on the glass and a crucial scoring performance from guard Jaden Bradley. The Wildcats improved to 5-0, while the Huskies suffered their first loss of the season, falling to 4-1.

Arizona seized control of the game by dominating the offensive boards, hauling in 11 offensive rebounds to Connecticut’s mere four. This relentless pursuit of second chances resulted in a significant advantage in shot attempts and free throw opportunities, ultimately offsetting a poor shooting night from beyond the arc for the Wildcats.

Neither team could establish a substantial lead in a first half characterized by physical play and missed shots. The Wildcats took a narrow 35-33 advantage into halftime, with both teams shooting under 45 percent from the floor in the opening period.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with the lead changing hands multiple times. Connecticut found some success from deep, finishing the game 8 of 25 from three-point range, while Arizona managed only 2 of 10. However, the Huskies’ inability to capitalize at the free-throw line proved costly, as they converted just 9 of 18 attempts. Arizona, by contrast, was more efficient, making 19 of 25 from the charity stripe.

The game remained a one-possession affair deep into the final minutes. With the score tight and under a minute to play, Arizona’s defense forced a critical turnover from Connecticut’s Silas Demary. On the ensuing possession, Jaden Bradley drove to the basket for a layup that extended the Wildcats’ lead and provided a cushion they would not relinquish.

Bradley, a Rochester, N.Y., native, was the offensive catalyst for Arizona, scoring a game-high 21 points. His ability to attack the basket and draw fouls was pivotal, as he consistently found ways to generate points in a game where offensive flow was scarce. He was supported by forward Koa Peat of Chandler, Ariz., who contributed 16 points and was a force defensively with two blocks.

Connecticut was led by its 7-foot-1 center Eric Reibe from Hannover, Germany, who scored 15 points. Silas Demary of Raleigh, N.C., added 13 points, and Solo Ball from Leesburg, Va., chipped in 14, but the Huskies’ offense often stalled against a disciplined Arizona defense. The Wildcats’ offensive rating of 111.2 points per 100 possessions narrowly bested the Huskies’ 102.2, reflecting the game’s slim margin.

The contest was remarkably clean, with Arizona committing only nine turnovers and Connecticut just five. However, the disparity in rebounding and free-throw shooting provided the Wildcats with the extra possessions and points needed to secure the road victory.

Arizona will look to continue its unbeaten streak when it returns home to face Denver on Monday. Connecticut, meanwhile, will regroup and prepare to host Bryant on Sunday. The Huskies face a daunting schedule ahead, with upcoming games against Illinois, Kansas, and Texas.
