High Point Routs Canisius in Dominant Home Victory
HIGH POINT, N.C. (Interstat) — The High Point Panthers delivered a dominant performance on both ends of the floor, overwhelming the Canisius Golden Griffins in a lopsided men’s NCAA Division I basketball game Monday night at Qubein Arena.
Fueled by a relentless defensive effort and an efficient offensive display, High Point cruised to a 93-50 victory in front of a crowd of 2,603. The Panthers improved their season record to 4-1, while the Golden Griffins fell to 2-3.
From the opening tip, High Point established control. The Panthers opened the game on a 10-0 run, setting the tone for a first half where they would lead by as many as 29 points. Canisius struggled to find any offensive rhythm against High Point’s pressure, committing 19 turnovers in the game, which the Panthers converted into numerous transition opportunities. High Point’s defense was stifling, tallying 15 steals and forcing the Golden Griffins into difficult shots all night.
The statistical disparity was stark. High Point shot a blistering 58% from the field, connecting on 36 of 62 attempts. They were nearly as effective from beyond the arc, making 13 of 32 three-pointers. Canisius, by contrast, managed to make only 15 of 49 shots from the floor, a frigid 31% clip, and just 4 of 17 from three-point range.
Rob Martin orchestrated the Panthers’ offense masterfully, dishing out eight assists to go with his team-high 17 points in just 23 minutes of action. His backcourt mate, Conrad Martinez, added 12 points, while Chase Johnston provided a spark off the bench with 15 points, all coming from three-point range.
The Panthers’ ball movement was a key factor, as they recorded 15 assists on their 36 made baskets. The Golden Griffins managed only four assists for the entire game, a testament to High Point’s disruptive defense.
Canisius was led by Christopher Kumu, who finished with nine points and four rebounds. Bryan Ndjonga added seven points and five rebounds, and Myles Wilmoth contributed four points and six rebounds.
Any hope of a second-half comeback for the Golden Griffins was quickly extinguished. High Point continued its offensive onslaught, scoring 47 points after halftime while maintaining its defensive intensity. The Panthers’ lead never dipped below 30 points in the second half as they closed out the comprehensive victory.
The game was a clear demonstration of High Point’s efficiency. Despite having fewer possessions than Canisius, 67 to 70, the Panthers scored nearly twice as many points, resulting in a vastly superior offensive rating.
The loss extends a pattern of offensive struggles for Canisius against higher-level competition this season, following a 48-point outing against Dayton and a 70-point effort in a loss to Saint Bonaventure. High Point, meanwhile, bounced back emphatically from its first loss of the season on Friday at UAB.
Canisius will look to regroup when it returns home to host Maryland-Eastern Shore on Friday. High Point continues its homestand with a game against Illinois-Chicago on Thursday.
