Charlotte at Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. (Interstat) — In a game defined by efficiency from the foul line and dominance on the glass, the Virginia Tech Hokies remained undefeated Sunday by holding off the Charlotte 49ers 84-76 at Cassell Coliseum.

Virginia Tech improved to 4-0, while Charlotte evened its record at 2-2.

The Hokies built a 44-32 halftime lead and, despite a more competitive second half from the visiting 49ers, never relinquished control. The difference in the contest was stark at the free-throw line, where Virginia Tech capitalized on its opportunities, converting 30 of 36 attempts. Charlotte, by contrast, struggled, making just 15 of 24 from the stripe.

Tobi Lawal was the engine for Virginia Tech, delivering a monumental performance with 18 points and 15 rebounds. His presence inside was felt on both ends of the floor, adding three blocks to his double-double. Jailen Bedford provided the primary scoring punch for the Hokies, pouring in a game-high 21 points.

Charlotte was led by a strong inside-outside combination. Anton Bonke, the 7-foot-2 center from Vanuatu, recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds in just 24 minutes of action. Damoni Harrison shouldered the scoring load from the perimeter, also finishing with 18 points.

The 49ers managed to outshoot Virginia Tech from the field, making 27 of 63 attempts compared to the Hokies’ 22 of 60. Charlotte also won the battle in the paint, outscoring Virginia Tech 30 to 24. However, those advantages were negated by Virginia Tech’s superior work at the charity stripe and a significant edge in points off turnovers, where the Hokies held a 15-7 advantage.

Virginia Tech’s offensive execution proved more potent, scoring 84 points on just 66 possessions for an offensive rating of 127.1. Charlotte, which had 69 possessions, posted an offensive rating of 109.5.

Ben Bradford and Kuluel Mading provided valuable support for Charlotte, scoring 15 and 12 points, respectively. For Virginia Tech, Jaden Schutt chipped in 12 points off the bench.

The game was played in front of an announced crowd of 5,295. Virginia Tech was a pregame favorite and covered the spread, while the total score of 160 surpassed the over/under line. The Hokies’ next contest is at home against Bryant on Wednesday. Charlotte travels to face Appalachian State on Friday.
