Hampton at Brown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Interstat) — The Hampton Pirates used a dominant second-half performance and capitalized on a record-breaking defensive effort from Brown’s N’Famara Dabo to secure a 72-63 victory over the Bears in a non-conference men’s basketball game Friday night at a sparsely attended Pizzitola Sports Center.

Despite Dabo’s extraordinary shot-blocking display, which set a new Brown single-game record with 11 rejections, the Pirates methodically pulled away after halftime. Hampton improved its record to 2-2 on the young season, while Brown’s winless start extended to 0-4.

The game was a tale of two halves, with the teams locked in a tight battle for the first 20 minutes. Hampton took a narrow 30-27 lead into the break before seizing control in the second period, outscoring Brown 42-36. The Pirates’ offense, while not efficient from the field, generated extra opportunities and capitalized at the free-throw line.

Hampton’s victory was fueled by a balanced scoring attack and a significant advantage in hustle stats. Michael Eley led the Pirates with 18 points, followed by Daniel Johnson with 17 and Jalyke Gaines-Wyatt with 16. Gaines-Wyatt also dished out a team-high six assists. The Pirates’ work on the glass was led by Xzavier Long, who hauled in a formidable 15 rebounds to go with seven points.

The Pirates overcame a poor shooting night from beyond the arc, making just 2 of 13 attempts, by aggressively attacking the basket. They attempted 28 free throws, making 22, and outscored Brown by 13 points from the charity stripe. Hampton also forced 18 Brown turnovers, converting them into 15 points, and held a 14-7 edge in offensive rebounds, leading to 15 second-chance points.

For Brown, Jeremiah Jenkins shouldered the scoring load with a game-high 21 points. Isaiah Langham contributed 13 points and six rebounds. Dabo, the 6-foot-8 junior from Conakry, Guinea, was a force in the paint, finishing with 11 points, seven rebounds, three assists and his historic 11 blocks. His defensive presence, however, was not enough to overcome the Bears’ offensive struggles.

Brown shot a better percentage from the field and from three-point range than Hampton, but attempts were limited due to turnovers and Hampton’s control of the possession battle. The Bears also struggled from the free-throw line, converting only 9 of 15 attempts.

The game’s outcome defied pregame projections, as statistical models had given Brown a 70 percent probability to win, and the Bears were installed as a 2.5-point favorite. The combined score of 135 points fell well under the betting over/under line of 142.5.

Hampton looks to continue its momentum when it hosts Holy Cross on Sunday. Brown will seek its first win of the season when it faces Holy Cross at home on Tuesday.
