Hampton Tops Brown for Road Win
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by a record-setting shot-blocking performance from Brown’s N’famara Dabo, the Hampton Pirates grinded out a 72-63 victory over the Bears in a non-conference men’s basketball game Friday night at a sparsely attended Pizzitola Sports Center.
Despite an anemic shooting night from beyond the arc, Hampton improved to 2-2 on the young season by leveraging a significant advantage in free throws and offensive rebounds. The Pirates shot just 2 of 13 from three-point range but made 22 of 28 attempts from the foul line and hauled in 14 offensive boards. Brown, falling to 0-4, was more efficient from the field but could not overcome 18 turnovers and a 9-of-15 performance at the charity stripe.
The game’s defining narrative was the historic defensive effort of Brown’s 6-foot-8 center, N’famara Dabo. The junior from Conakry, Guinea, was a force in the paint, swatting away 11 Hampton shots, a single-game record for the Brown program. He narrowly missed a triple-double, adding 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists in 37 minutes of action.
Hampton’s victory was a collective effort, with four players scoring in double figures. Michael Eley, a guard from Fort Wayne, Ind., led the Pirates with 18 points, while Daniel Johnson of Chicago added 17. Jalyke Gaines-Wyatt contributed 16 points and six assists, and the interior presence was provided by Xzavier Long, who pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds to go with seven points.
The first half was a low-scoring affair, with Hampton taking a 30-27 lead into the break. The Pirates’ offense was sluggish, but their defense forced 10 Brown turnovers. Dabo’s shot-blocking prowess was on full display early, as he rejected several Hampton attempts at the rim to keep the Bears within striking distance.
Brown guard Jeremiah Jenkins, from New Britain, Conn., kept his team competitive with a game-high 21 points, including three made three-pointers. Isaiah Langham of Stoughton, Mass., provided support with 13 points and six rebounds.
The Pirates began to create separation early in the second half. A driving layup by Eley, followed by a steal and a pair of free throws from Gaines-Wyatt, extended the Hampton lead to nine points just over four minutes into the period. The Bears repeatedly tried to mount a comeback, often fueled by Jenkins’ outside shooting, but each time Hampton had an answer, usually from the free-throw line or via a second-chance opportunity.
A key sequence with under five minutes to play saw Long convert a steal into a thunderous dunk to push the Hampton lead to 11. Brown could get no closer than seven points the rest of the way as the Pirates iced the game by making their free throws in the final minute.
While Brown won the battle of field goal percentage, shooting 50 percent to Hampton’s 40.7 percent, the Pirates dominated the hustle categories. They outscored Brown 15-14 off turnovers, 11-8 on fast breaks, and their work on the glass led to a 32-28 advantage in points in the paint.
Hampton’s next contest is at home against Holy Cross on Sunday. Brown, still in search of its first win, will also host Holy Cross on Tuesday.
