Gonzaga at Arizona State

TEMPE, Ariz. (Interstat) — In a matchup defined by defensive pressure and offensive struggles, the Gonzaga Bulldogs remained undefeated by grinding out a 77-65 victory over the Arizona State Sun Devils before a crowd of 10,016 at Wells Fargo Arena on Friday night.

Gonzaga, now 4-0, never trailed after establishing an early double-digit lead in the first half, but could never fully put the Sun Devils away in a contest where crisp execution was at a premium. The Bulldogs leveraged a significant advantage at the free-throw line and a dominant performance in the paint to secure the win.

The game’s tone was set early, with both teams struggling to find an offensive rhythm. Gonzaga built its initial lead not with a flurry of baskets, but with methodical play, capitalizing on free throws and second-chance opportunities. A 13-point first-half lead was the product of this approach, as the Bulldogs took a 45-32 advantage into halftime despite shooting just 39 percent from the floor in the opening period.

Arizona State, which fell to 2-1, relied heavily on the three-point shot to stay within reach, connecting on 10 of 30 attempts from beyond the arc. However, their inability to score inside and a dismal 13-for-23 performance from the free-throw line prevented any sustained comeback. The Sun Devils also committed 14 turnovers, which Gonzaga converted into 15 points.

The Bulldogs were led by a powerful inside presence. Graham Ike, a 6-foot-9 forward from Aurora, Colorado, was the game’s standout performer, scoring 20 points and anchoring Gonzaga’s interior defense. His ability to draw fouls and convert at the line was crucial, as the Bulldogs attempted 35 free throws compared to Arizona State’s 23.

Tyon Grant-Foster provided a vital spark off the bench for Gonzaga, adding 14 points and contributing defensively with two blocks. Braden Huff also reached double figures with 11 points, helping to bolster a Bulldogs’ bench that outscored its counterparts.

For Arizona State, the offense was a disjointed effort. Maurice Odum of the Bronx, New York, facilitated much of the action, dishing out seven assists and scoring 12 points, but he also accounted for several of the team’s turnovers. The Sun Devils saw balanced scoring, with Bryce Ford (Scottsdale, Arizona), Massamba Diop (Rufisque, Senegal), Santiago Trouet (Buenos Aires, Argentina), and Anthony Johnson (Midfield, Alabama) all scoring between 10 and 12 points. Diop and Trouet each added two blocks defensively.

While Arizona State won the battle in several hustle categories, including steals (7-2) and blocks (6-5), they were ultimately undone by inefficient offense. The Sun Devils posted an offensive rating of just 90.4 points per 100 possessions, while Gonzaga managed a more effective 106.0.

The Bulldogs’ victory was their first true road test of the young season, following dominant home wins over Creighton, Oklahoma, and Texas Southern. They will look to continue their winning ways when they host Southern Utah on Monday. Arizona State, which had previously defeated Utah Tech and Southern Utah, will aim to rebound at home against Georgia State, also on Monday.
