Gonzaga Rides Strong First Half to Road Victory Over Arizona State

TEMPE, Ariz. (Interstat) — In a gritty, defensively-oriented contest at a raucous Wells Fargo Arena, the Gonzaga Bulldogs remained undefeated Friday night, methodically dispatching the Arizona State Sun Devils 77 to 65.

A crowd of 10,016 saw the Bulldogs improve to 4-0 on the young season, while the Sun Devils fell to 2-1. The game, characterized by physical play and offensive struggles for both sides, was won by Gonzaga on the strength of a dominant first half and superior efficiency at the free-throw line.

Gonzaga seized control early, building a 45-32 halftime lead. The Bulldogs’ offense, while not always fluid, was effective at drawing contact and capitalizing at the charity stripe. They attempted 35 free throws, making 27, while Arizona State managed only 13 makes on 23 attempts. This 14-point disparity at the line proved to be a decisive factor in the final margin.

The Bulldogs were led by a powerful performance from Graham Ike. The 6-foot-9, 250-pound forward from Aurora, Colorado, was a force in the paint, scoring a game-high 20 points and anchoring the Gonzaga defense. His presence was felt throughout his 34 minutes on the court.

He received crucial support from Tyon Grant-Foster, who provided a spark off the bench with 14 points and a pair of blocks in 22 minutes. Braden Huff also chipped in 11 points, offering valuable secondary scoring for the visitors.

Arizona State, conversely, could not find a consistent offensive rhythm. The Sun Devils shot just 21 for 58 from the field and committed nine turnovers against only seven assists. Their offensive rating of 90.4 points per 100 possessions paled in comparison to Gonzaga’s mark of 106.0.

The Sun Devils’ attack was led by a balanced effort. Maurice Odum filled the stat sheet with 12 points and seven assists, while Bryce Ford and Massamba Diop each contributed 11 points. Santiago Trouet added 10 points and was a disruptive force defensively with two blocks. Anthony Johnson also scored 10 points for the home team.

Despite the double-digit deficit for much of the second half, Arizona State showed flashes of resistance. They outscored Gonzaga 33-32 after the break and managed to out-hustle the Bulldogs in several categories, finishing with more steals, blocks, and assists. However, they could never string together a sustained run to seriously threaten Gonzaga’s lead, as every mini-surge was answered by a Bulldog basket or a trip to the free-throw line.

The game was a stark contrast in styles. Gonzaga relied on its interior strength and discipline, scoring 32 points in the paint and patiently working for high-percentage shots or fouls. Arizona State attempted to speed up the game, generating 14 fastbreak points to Gonzaga’s 12, but their reliance on the three-point shot proved inconsistent as they hit only 10 of 30 attempts from beyond the arc.

Gonzaga’s victory was built on a foundation of control. They won the rebounding battle, particularly on the offensive glass with nine rebounds leading to second-chance opportunities. While their own assist total was a surprisingly low two for the game, their ability to generate points through individual efforts and free throws was enough to secure the road win.

The Bulldogs now look ahead to a Monday night matchup against Southern Utah, aiming to maintain their perfect record. Arizona State, seeking to rebound from its first loss, will host Georgia State also on Monday.
