Purdue at Alabama
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (Interstat) — In a hard-fought battle between two undefeated teams, the Purdue Boilermakers used a dominant performance on the glass and a stellar effort from Trey Kaufman-Renn to hand the Alabama Crimson Tide their first loss of the season, 87-80, on Thursday night at a packed Coleman Coliseum.
The game lived up to its billing as a high-powered offensive showdown, but it was Purdue’s relentless rebounding that proved to be the decisive factor. The Boilermakers (3-0) crushed Alabama on the boards, hauling in 17 offensive rebounds which led to a series of crucial second-chance points. Alabama (2-1), which entered the game as a slight favorite, managed only five offensive rebounds.
Kaufman-Renn was the engine for Purdue, delivering a monster double-double with 19 points and 15 rebounds. His work on the offensive glass, where he grabbed six rebounds, consistently extended possessions and demoralized the Alabama defense. He added five assists in 33 minutes of action.
He was complemented brilliantly by guard Braden Smith, who led all scorers with 29 points. Smith was efficient from the floor and a perfect 9-for-9 from the free-throw line in the second half, helping to seal the victory down the stretch. Oscar Cluff just missed a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds, further emphasizing Purdue’s interior dominance.
The game was a tale of contrasting offensive styles. Alabama relied heavily on the three-point shot, attempting 44 from beyond the arc and making 16. Purdue, meanwhile, focused on its interior strength, attempting 21 threes and making nine, but outscoring the Crimson Tide 42-28 in the paint.
Aden Holloway led the Alabama attack with 21 points, fueled by five three-pointers. Labaron Philon orchestrated the offense with seven assists but was hampered by six turnovers. Aiden Sherrell added 12 points for the Crimson Tide, while Taylor Bol Bowen and Houston Mallette chipped in 13 and nine points, respectively.
The first half was a tightly contested affair, with Purdue taking a narrow 43-41 lead into the break. The Boilermakers maintained their slim advantage throughout much of the second half, but could never fully pull away from the persistent Crimson Tide. Alabama’s reliance on the three-ball ultimately became a weakness, as they shot just 36% from deep while Purdue’s more balanced attack and overwhelming rebounding edge, which led to 12 more field goal attempts, provided the winning margin.
Purdue’s offense was highly efficient, scoring 126.2 points per 100 possessions, while Alabama’s potent attack was held to 111.5 points per 100 possessions. The Boilermakers also won the turnover battle, committing nine to Alabama’s six, but the Crimson Tide managed eight steals.
The announced attendance was 13,474 for the marquee non-conference matchup. Purdue will look to continue its early-season momentum when it hosts Akron on Sunday. Alabama will hit the road for its next contest, facing Illinois in Chicago on Wednesday.
