Purdue Holds Off Alabama in Top-10 Showdown
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (Interstat) — In a high-stakes, early-season nonconference showdown, the Purdue Boilermakers went on the road and handed the Alabama Crimson Tide its first loss of the season, securing an 87-80 victory before a crowd of 13,474 at Coleman Coliseum on Thursday night.
The game was a tale of contrasting strengths, with Purdue’s overwhelming dominance on the glass and efficient offense ultimately overcoming a prolific three-point shooting display from the Crimson Tide.
The contest was a back-and-forth affair from the opening tip. Alabama’s Aiden Sherrell won the jump ball and immediately threw down a dunk just 16 seconds into the game, setting an early tone. Purdue responded with an 8-0 run, fueled by early post scores from Oscar Cluff and the playmaking of Braden Smith. The first half featured 10 lead changes as both teams traded blows. Alabama relied heavily on the long ball, with Aden Holloway and Taylor Bol Bowen connecting from deep, while Purdue worked the ball inside, with Trey Kaufman-Renn establishing a formidable presence.
Purdue took a narrow 43-41 lead into halftime, a margin built not on flashy shooting but on relentless rebounding. The Boilermakers secured 11 offensive rebounds in the first half alone, leading to 12 second-chance points and allowing them to maintain possession and weather Alabama’s three-point barrages.
The second half followed a similar script. Every time Purdue threatened to pull away, Alabama would answer, often with a critical three-pointer. A Holloway triple with 12:24 remaining brought the Crimson Tide to within three points at 59-56, forcing a Purdue timeout. The Boilermakers’ response was decisive. They tightened their defense, limited Alabama’s second chances, and slowly began to create separation.
The game was ultimately decided in the paint and on the boards. Purdue’s massive front line, led by Kaufman-Renn and Cluff, proved too much for Alabama to handle. The Boilermakers finished with a staggering 17 offensive rebounds, leading to a 21-4 advantage in second-chance points. Conversely, Alabama managed only five offensive rebounds all game.
While Alabama attempted 44 three-pointers, making 16, their reliance on the perimeter shot came at the expense of interior scoring and free throw opportunities. The Crimson Tide attempted only 10 free throws, making eight. Purdue, by contrast, attacked the basket consistently, earning 23 free throw attempts and making 16.
Purdue’s offensive execution was superior, scoring 87 points on just 69 possessions for an offensive rating of 126.2. Alabama scored 80 points on 72 possessions, for a rating of 111.5. The Boilermakers also protected the ball better in the second half, finishing with only nine turnovers compared to Alabama’s six, though the Tide did record eight steals.
Trey Kaufman-Renn was the engine for Purdue, delivering a monstrous double-double with 19 points and 15 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end. He also dished out five assists, showcasing his versatility and court vision. Guard Braden Smith was the game’s high scorer, pouring in 29 points to go along with seven rebounds and four assists, consistently hitting big shots whenever Alabama threatened a run.
For Alabama, Aden Holloway led the scoring charge with 21 points, fueled by five three-pointers. Labaron Philon facilitated the offense with a team-high seven assists and added 11 points. Aiden Sherrell provided 12 points off the bench, and Taylor Bol Bowen chipped in 13, but their efforts were not enough to counter Purdue’s interior dominance.
With the win, Purdue remains undefeated, improving its record to 3-0. Alabama, which entered the game after a high-scoring road win over Saint John’s, falls to 2-1. The Boilermakers will look to continue their momentum when they host Akron on Sunday. Alabama faces another major test, traveling to Chicago to face Illinois next Wednesday. The result was an upset according to pregame metrics, which heavily favored the Crimson Tide at home.
