Mexico City vs. Valley

TEMPE, Ariz. (Interstat) — The Valley Suns, anchored by a dominant 31-point first quarter, never trailed and snapped a three-game losing streak with a decisive 114-94 victory over the Mexico City Capitanes in a G League game Wednesday night at Mullett Arena.

Facing the Capitanes for the second consecutive night, the Suns reversed the result of Tuesday’s meeting, where Mexico City won by 13 points. This time, Valley established control immediately, opening a double-digit lead in the first quarter and maintaining a comfortable margin throughout to improve its season record to 14-36. Mexico City, which entered the game with a 28-18 record, fell to 28-19.

The game’s most important stretch was its outset. The Suns came out with palpable energy, forcing three Mexico City turnovers in the first three minutes and converting them into easy transition opportunities. Valley shot efficiently in the opening period, scoring 31 points while holding the Capitanes to 20, effectively setting a tone of defensive pressure and offensive execution that Mexico City could not overcome.

Valley point guard Jaden Shackelford led all scorers with a comprehensive performance, consistently answering any attempt by the Capitanes to build momentum. His backcourt mate, Zhuric Phelps, provided crucial support with his activity on both ends, contributing steals, assists and timely scoring.

For Mexico City, the early deficit proved insurmountable despite balanced scoring. The Capitanes were led by forward Andersson Garcia, whose effort on the glass and as a secondary playmaker kept the visitors within striking distance for stretches. Center Tomas Chapero provided an interior presence, but the team’s overall shooting struggled to match the Suns’ early firepower.

Mexico City made several pushes, including a 31-point fourth quarter, but each time the Suns responded with key baskets, often from Shackelford or forward Sean McDermott, to stifle the rally. Valley’s ball movement was superior, leading to higher-percentage shots and a sustained offensive flow that the Capitanes’ defense could not consistently disrupt.

The Suns’ bench also provided a significant lift, outscoring their counterparts and maintaining the intensity when starters rested. This depth allowed Valley to keep its foot on the gas and avoid the lulls that have plagued them during a difficult season.

With the win, Valley avoids a series sweep after dropping the first game of the back-to-back. Mexico City, which had won eight of its last ten games coming in, will look to regroup on the road. The Capitanes continue their trip Saturday at Austin. The Suns’ next game has not yet been scheduled.
