Stockton vs. South Bay
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (Interstat) — In a game defined by its frantic final seconds, the Stockton Kings edged the South Bay Lakers 115-114 in a G League thriller on Tuesday night at the UCLA Health Training Center.
The contest, a critical matchup between Pacific Division contenders, saw 15 lead changes and was not decided until the final possession. The most important sequence unfolded in the last five seconds, encapsulating the night’s tension and dramatic swings.
With the Lakers having erased a 17-point second-half deficit to take a late lead, Stockton’s DaQuan Jeffries hit a 26-foot fadeaway jumper with three seconds remaining to put the Kings ahead 115-114. The shot capped a remarkable closing performance for Jeffries, who was instrumental in Stockton’s offensive execution down the stretch.
South Bay, with no timeouts remaining, quickly inbounded the ball to R.J. Davis, who raced upcourt and launched a 27-foot 3-pointer that found the net with five-tenths of a second left, seemingly delivering a miraculous Lakers victory. However, the officials immediately waved off the basket, ruling that Davis’s foot was on the out-of-bounds line as he received the initial inbound pass, a call confirmed upon video review.
The Lakers were granted a second chance with 0.3 seconds left after the review, but Malik Williams’ desperation 20-foot attempt at the buzzer was off target, securing the narrow road win for Stockton.
The victory improved Stockton’s record to 31-16, pulling them a half-game ahead of South Bay, which fell to 31-17 in the tightly contested division race. The game was a stark contrast to their last meeting on Feb. 28, when South Bay secured a 115-100 home win.
Stockton built its largest lead in the third quarter, using a 15-4 run to go ahead by 17 points. The Kings’ offense was fueled by balanced scoring and a period of hot outside shooting. South Bay, however, mounted a relentless fourth-quarter comeback behind the play of Arthur Kaluma and Malik Williams. The Lakers’ 35-point final period, their highest-scoring quarter of the night, featured a 21-8 run that turned a 10-point deficit into a three-point lead with under three minutes to play.
The closing minutes became a possession-by-possession battle, featuring multiple lead changes, clutch shots, and critical defensive stops. Both teams utilized coach’s challenges in the final minute, with South Bay unsuccessfully challenging a foul call on Williams that sent Jeffries to the line for two decisive free throws with 17 seconds left, which he made to set the stage for the final sequence.
Key performances for Stockton included Jeffries’ timely scoring and playmaking, along with significant contributions from Jon Elmore and Jaylin Williams, who provided interior defense and rebounding. For South Bay, Kaluma was a consistent force throughout the game, while Malik Williams offered a strong two-way presence and R.J. Davis facilitated the offense despite the final heartbreaking turnover.
The game’s intensity reflected its stakes, with Interstat’s ELO system having projected South Bay as a significant favorite with a 77.3% probability to win. Stockton’s victory snapped South Bay’s four-game home winning streak and provided a pivotal result in the playoff positioning chase with less than a month remaining in the regular season.
Stockton next travels for a two-game series at San Diego on Friday and Saturday. South Bay will look to rebound when it hosts Sioux Falls on Thursday.
