Valley vs. San Diego
SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — The San Diego Clippers used a dominant first quarter to set the tone and never looked back, cruising to a 113-87 victory over the Valley Suns in a G League matchup on Thursday night at Frontwave Arena.
The Clippers exploded for 40 points in the opening period, establishing a 23-point lead that the Suns could never seriously threaten. Valley’s 17-point first-quarter output put them in a deep hole from which they could not recover, despite a 38-point surge in the second quarter. San Diego’s defense tightened after halftime, limiting the Suns to just 10 points in the third quarter to extinguish any lingering hope of a comeback.
The game’s most pivotal segment came early, as San Diego opened on a 22-4 run over the first six and a half minutes. The Clippers’ offense was efficient and their defense disruptive, forcing multiple Suns turnovers and converting them into easy baskets. Valley’s first timeout of the game, called with 6:50 remaining in the first quarter after a Jahmyl Telfort jumper made it 24-6, did little to stem the tide. San Diego’s ball movement and inside-out play, led early by center Zach Freemantle, created high-percentage looks and built an insurmountable cushion.
Freemantle was instrumental in the early onslaught, controlling the glass and facilitating from the high post. His activity set the stage for a balanced Clippers attack. Taylor Funk provided consistent scoring punch from the perimeter, while Telfort and Hunter Sallis added timely baskets. The Clippers’ depth was on full display, with Cameron Smith, Desmond Cambridge and Elijah Cain all contributing to the sustained offensive pressure.
Valley’s Jaden Shackelford led a brief resurgence in the second quarter, scoring 14 of his team-high total during the frame as the Suns cut the deficit to 13 points at one stage. However, San Diego answered every run, closing the first half with a small spurt to lead 58-55 at intermission and then slamming the door in the third quarter by outscoring Valley 30-10.
The Clippers improved their record to 25 wins and 22 losses, solidifying their position in the G League standings. The Suns, who entered the game with the league’s worst record, fell to 13-34. The two teams are scheduled for a quick rematch at Frontwave Arena on Saturday night.
San Diego’s defensive effort was comprehensive, generating 14 steals and forcing 22 Valley turnovers, which they converted into 31 points. The Clippers also dominated points in the paint and second-chance opportunities, underscoring their control of the game’s interior.
The victory unfolded largely as predicted by advanced metrics, with San Diego entering as a heavy favorite. The Clippers executed their game plan from the opening tip, using the explosive first quarter to dictate the pace and secure a comfortable wire-to-wire win.
