Salt Lake City vs. Rio Grande Valley

EDINBURG, Texas (Interstat) — The Rio Grande Valley Vipers used a dominant first quarter to set the tone and never looked back, cruising to a 128-101 victory over the Salt Lake City Stars in a G League matchup Friday night at Bert Ogden Arena.

The Vipers exploded for 36 points in the opening period, establishing a double-digit lead they would not relinquish. The offensive onslaught was led by center Omer Yurtseven, who controlled the paint from the outset. His early activity, including a dunk off an assist from Isaiah Crawford just over 40 seconds into the game, sparked the initial run. The Vipers’ ball movement and interior scoring overwhelmed the Stars, who trailed by 10 after one quarter despite scoring 26 points themselves.

Salt Lake City, coming off a high-scoring win over Texas earlier in the week, could not find consistent stops to mount a comeback. Every time the Stars threatened to cut into the deficit, Rio Grande Valley answered with a burst. The Vipers extended their lead to 61-48 by halftime and then delivered a decisive blow with a 37-point third quarter, pushing their advantage to 98-71 and effectively putting the game out of reach.

The most important part of the game was the Vipers’ sustained offensive efficiency and their ability to capitalize on Stars’ mistakes. Rio Grande Valley generated high-percentage shots throughout the night, particularly in the paint, and converted Salt Lake City turnovers into easy transition opportunities. The Vipers’ defensive pressure, led by active hands from guards Daishen Nix and J.D. Davison, disrupted the Stars’ rhythm and prevented any sustained offensive runs.

Yurtseven was a focal point for the Vipers, using his 7-foot frame to score efficiently around the basket and protect the rim. Crawford provided versatile playmaking and defense on the wing, while Cameron Matthews of Olive Branch, Mississippi, contributed with timely scoring and assists. For the Stars, Dereon Seabron and Sean East shouldered much of the offensive load, but the team’s defensive struggles proved too significant to overcome.

With the win, Rio Grande Valley improved its season record to 26-17, while Salt Lake City fell to 26-19. The two teams are scheduled for a quick rematch at Bert Ogden Arena on Saturday night. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Rio Grande Valley entered the contest with a 69.4 percent probability to win, a projection they fulfilled with a comprehensive performance on their home floor.
