Salt Lake City vs. Rio Grande Valley
Preview: Stars, Vipers Clash in Key G League Showdown
EDINBURG, Texas (Interstat) — A pivotal Western Conference matchup is set for Friday when the Salt Lake City Stars visit the Rio Grande Valley Vipers at Bert Ogden Arena.
Both teams enter the contest with nearly identical records and playoff positioning on the line. The visiting Stars (26-18) hold a slim half-game lead over the Vipers (25-17) in the standings, adding significant weight to the result.
Salt Lake City arrives riding momentum from a 134-125 home victory over Texas on Tuesday. Forward Blake Hinson powered that win with a game-high 36 points in 41 minutes. He will be a primary focus for the Stars’ offense.
Rio Grande Valley looks to rebound after a disappointing 94-86 home loss to Austin on Tuesday, which snapped a two-game winning streak. The Vipers will lean on versatile forward Tristen Newton, who has been a consistent triple-double threat. Over his last eight games, Newton is averaging 24.3 points, 6.6 rebounds and 5.0 assists, including a 34-point performance against San Diego on Feb. 25 and a near triple-double (21 points, 9 rebounds, 9 assists) in a win at Raptors 905 on March 4.
The teams have split two meetings this season. The Stars won the most recent encounter, 121-112 on the road on March 2. The Vipers took the first matchup, 123-120 at home on Feb. 12.
The game will feature two of the league’s higher-powered offenses. Salt Lake City has scored 120 or more points in eight of its last ten games. Rio Grande Valley has topped 120 points in five of its last ten, including a 137-point outburst at Windy City on March 8.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CST Friday. The teams will meet again at the same venue on Saturday.
