Mexico City vs. Wisconsin
OSHKOSH, Wis. (Interstat) — The Mexico City Capitanes used a dominant second quarter to pull away from the Wisconsin Herd and secure a 116-97 victory in a G League matchup Saturday night at Oshkosh Arena.
The game was closely contested early, with Wisconsin holding a narrow 26-18 lead after the first quarter. The momentum shifted decisively in the second period, however, as Mexico City erupted for 34 points while holding the Herd to 27, taking a 52-53 lead into halftime. The Capitanes maintained their offensive efficiency after the break, matching their second-quarter output with another 34 points in the third to extend their advantage to 86-79. The most important part of the game was Mexico City’s comprehensive team performance, which overwhelmed Wisconsin despite a triple-double from the Herd’s Stevie Thompson. The Capitanes’ balanced attack and defensive intensity in the second and third quarters turned an early deficit into a commanding lead that was never seriously threatened.
Andersson Garcia led Mexico City with a stat line of 12 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three blocks in 29 minutes, providing critical interior defense and energy. Felipe Haase paced the Capitanes in scoring with 22 points, adding three rebounds and three assists. R.J. Melendez contributed 16 points and four rebounds, while guards Boo Buie and Wade Taylor each scored 14 points and combined for 13 assists.
For Wisconsin, Stevie Thompson recorded a triple-double with 14 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in 40 minutes. Kira Lewis also scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds, and Johnny Davis added 14 points off the bench. John Butler finished with 12 points and six rebounds for the Herd.
With the win, Mexico City improved its season record to 25-16 across all competitions. Wisconsin fell to 12-30.
The Capitanes continue their road trip with a game at Grand Rapids on Tuesday. Wisconsin will host Valley on Monday.
