Santa Cruz vs. Rip City
PORTLAND, Ore. (Interstat) — The Santa Cruz Warriors, propelled by a historic shooting display from center Marques Bolden and a late-game defensive stand, snapped a two-game losing streak to the Rip City Remix with a 118-113 victory in a G League contest Sunday at the Chiles Center.
The most critical sequence of the game unfolded in the final 30 seconds, with Santa Cruz clinging to a narrow lead. Leading 114-111 with 27 seconds remaining, the Remix had a chance to tie after drawing a foul. Javonte Cooke, who led all scorers, made the first free throw but missed the second. Jayson Kent secured the offensive rebound, and Cooke hit a tough jumper to tie the game at 114.
On the ensuing possession, the Warriors’ Malevy Leons committed a turnover, which Cooke stole and converted into a driving layup while drawing a foul. He completed the three-point play, giving Rip City a 117-114 lead with just over a minute to play.
Santa Cruz, however, refused to fold. After a timeout, the Warriors executed a play for Bolden, but his shot was blocked by Cooke. Rip City secured the rebound but then missed a three-pointer. Bolden grabbed the defensive board and was fouled, sending him to the line where he made one of two, cutting the deficit to 117-115.
The Warriors then immediately fouled Cooke, who missed the first of two free throws before making the second, putting Rip City ahead 118-115. Santa Cruz guard Deivon Smith was then fouled on a drive and calmly sank both free throws to make it a one-point game.
Needing a stop, the Warriors forced a difficult three-point attempt from Rip City’s Caleb Love that missed. Yang Hansen grabbed the offensive rebound and dunked it, but officials reviewed the play and determined the basket came after the shot clock expired, waving it off and preserving Santa Cruz’s 118-117 lead with 6 seconds left.
Smith was fouled again and made both free throws for a 120-117 advantage. A final heave from Love was off the mark as time expired, sealing the road win for Santa Cruz.
The frantic finish capped a game defined by Santa Cruz’s explosive start. The Warriors built their lead primarily in the first half, thanks to an extraordinary shooting performance from Bolden. The 6-foot-11 center stunned the Remix by making his first six three-point attempts, all within the game’s opening minutes. His early barrage forced two Rip City timeouts before the first quarter was halfway done and helped Santa Cruz establish a 65-49 halftime advantage after leading 32-30 following the first period.
Rip City, which entered the game with a 21-15 record and was a heavy favorite according to predictive metrics, chipped away in the second half. A 35-point fourth quarter, led by Cooke’s relentless scoring, brought the Remix all the way back to take the late lead before Santa Cruz’s final push.
With the win, Santa Cruz improved to 12-22 on the season, while Rip City fell to 21-16. The two teams will meet again in Portland on Tuesday.
