Austin vs. Iowa
DES MOINES, Iowa (Interstat) — In a high-octane G League showdown Wednesday night, the Austin Spurs used a dominant second-quarter surge to pull away from the Iowa Wolves and secure a 135-120 victory at Wells Fargo Arena.
The game, a rematch from just 24 hours prior where Austin also emerged victorious, was ultimately decided by a blistering stretch of offense from the visitors. After a competitive first quarter that ended with Iowa leading 28-25, the Spurs erupted for 41 points in the second period. That offensive explosion, which saw Austin connect on five three-pointers and shoot a perfect 6 for 6 from the free throw line, turned a narrow deficit into a commanding 66-61 halftime lead. The Spurs never relinquished that advantage, maintaining their offensive efficiency with 33 points in the third quarter and 36 in the fourth to keep the Wolves at bay.
Harrison Ingram led the charge for Austin, posting a double-double with 25 points, 10 rebounds and six assists in 32 minutes. His all-around performance anchored the Spurs’ attack. Stanley Umude added 20 points, while Kyle Mangas came off the bench to score 18, all of which came from beyond the arc as he hit six three-pointers. The Spurs’ ball movement and defensive pressure were key differentiators, as they tallied 12 assists and 12 steals compared to Iowa’s five in each category. Austin also capitalized on its free throw opportunities, making all 16 attempts.
Despite the loss, Iowa received a spectacular scoring performance from Terrence Shannon, who poured in 36 points in just 21 minutes off the bench. Jules Bernard nearly recorded a triple-double with 25 points, seven rebounds and nine assists. Rocco Zikarsky, the center from Sunshine Coast, Australia, controlled the paint with 15 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks.
The most critical phase of the game was unquestionably Austin’s second-quarter run. The Spurs’ offense, which finished the night with an offensive rating of 129.1 points per 100 possessions, shifted into overdrive during this stretch. A combination of transition baskets fueled by their active defense and hot outside shooting from players like Mangas and Ingram allowed them to build a cushion that Iowa, despite several rallies led by Shannon, could never fully erase. The Wolves committed 17 turnovers, leading to 23 points for Austin, which proved a significant hurdle in their comeback attempts.
With the win, Austin improved its season record to 24-9, solidifying its position near the top of the league standings. Iowa fell to 21-15. The Spurs will next travel to face the San Diego Clippers for a two-game set beginning Feb. 19. Iowa’s next contest is at home against the Rio Grande Valley Vipers on Feb. 22.
