South Bay vs. Capital City
WASHINGTON (Interstat) — In a game defined by relentless offensive execution and dramatic momentum swings, the Capital City Go-Go edged the South Bay Lakers 115-114 in a G League thriller Friday afternoon at CareFirst Arena.
The contest, a rematch of a South Bay victory just two days prior, was decided in the final seconds as Capital City guard Keshon Gilbert converted a driving layup with 11 seconds remaining to break a 113-113 tie. South Bay’s ensuing possession ended in a turnover, sealing the one-point victory for the home team and avenging Wednesday’s loss.
The most critical phase of the game unfolded in the final minute. With the score knotted at 111, South Bay’s Kobe Bufkin lost possession to Gilbert, leading to an Alondes Williams layup that put Capital City ahead 113-111 with 54 seconds left. South Bay’s Anton Watson calmly sank two free throws to tie the game again at 113 with 31 seconds on the clock. That set the stage for Gilbert’s decisive basket, a determined drive through traffic for the final lead change.
Capital City’s victory was anchored by a dominant third-quarter surge. Trailing 53-55 at halftime, the Go-Go erupted for 35 points in the period, overturning the deficit to take an 88-83 lead into the final quarter. The run was fueled primarily by center Skal Labissiere, who showcased a versatile offensive game with multiple three-pointers and interior finishes during the stretch. Labissiere’s performance provided the consistent scoring punch that allowed Capital City to withstand South Bay’s own high-powered attack.
South Bay, which led 25-27 after a back-and-forth first quarter and extended its advantage to 53-55 by halftime, saw its offense continue to produce but could not contain Capital City’s outburst. The Lakers placed five players in double figures, led by Arthur Kaluma’s interior work and the guard combination of Bufkin and R.J. Davis, but their defensive efforts faltered during the Go-Go’s key run.
The game’s closing sequence after Gilbert’s go-ahead basket was frantic. South Bay called a timeout with seven seconds left but committed a turnover on the inbound play. Capital City then called its own timeout, only for South Bay to foul immediately. No free throws were attempted as the clock expired, finalizing the narrow margin.
With the win, Capital City improved its season record to 16-15, while South Bay fell to 17-15. The Go-Go host Birmingham on Saturday. The Lakers return home to face San Diego on Wednesday.
