College Park vs. South Bay

SOUTH BAY, Calif. (Interstat) — The South Bay Lakers look to build on a decisive victory and climb above .500 when they host the struggling College Park Skyhawks in a G League matchup Tuesday night at the UCLA Health Training Center.

The Lakers (13-13) are coming off a dominant 125-95 win over Mexico City on Saturday, where they shot 56% from the field. Forward Arthur Kaluma led the way with 25 points, continuing a strong stretch of play. Over his last 10 games, Kaluma is averaging 16.1 points and 5.3 rebounds, providing consistent scoring for a South Bay squad that has split its last six contests.

They face a College Park team (8-19) mired in a difficult season. The Skyhawks have lost eight of their last nine games, including a 121-115 defeat to Maine last Wednesday. Despite the losses, rookie center Asa Newell has been a bright spot. He posted a standout performance in that game with 29 points, 12 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 blocks. In his previous outing against Maine, he added 15 points and 7 rebounds.

College Park’s recent struggles are underscored by defensive issues, allowing an average of 124.2 points during their 1-8 skid. Their lone win in that span was a 139-113 victory over Delaware on Jan. 14. Guard play has been a strength, however, with Kobe Johnson and RayJ Dennis combining for 39 points and 13 assists in the most recent loss.

South Bay won the only prior meeting this season, a 131-119 victory on Dec. 21. The Lakers will aim to control the interior, where Kaluma and center Kylor Kelley, who had a 12-point, 13-rebound double-double Saturday, could challenge Newell. The Skyhawks will need another all-around effort from their top rookie and improved perimeter defense to slow South Bay’s offense, which put up 125 points in its last outing.

Tuesday’s game tips off at 7 p.m. PST. South Bay hosts Salt Lake City on Thursday, while College Park continues a West Coast road trip at San Diego on Friday.
