Austin vs. Valley

TEMPE, Ariz. (Interstat) — The Austin Spurs used a dominant second-half offensive performance to pull away from the Valley Suns for a 116-107 victory in a G League game Tuesday night at Mullett Arena.

The Spurs, who led the entire game after scoring the first five points, steadily increased their offensive output each quarter to secure the win and improve their record to 21-7. The Suns fell to 8-21.

Austin established an early lead, closing the first quarter with a 25-20 advantage behind quick transition play and early activity from Harrison Ingram. The Spurs maintained a slim margin through a tightly contested second period, taking a 51-46 lead into halftime.

The game’s decisive stretch came in the third quarter. After Valley’s Jaden Shackelford hit a 3-pointer to cut Austin’s lead to 63-60 with 6:43 remaining, the Spurs responded with a critical 11-2 run over the next three minutes. The surge was fueled by transition baskets from Donovan Williams and James Banks, along with a 3-pointer from David Jones, pushing the lead to 74-65 and forcing a Valley timeout.

Austin carried that momentum into the fourth quarter, where its offense reached its peak. The Spurs scored 35 points in the final period, repeatedly answering any attempt by the Suns to mount a comeback. Valley managed to close the gap to 96-93 with 4:35 remaining after a driving layup by Jaden Shackelford and a free throw from Koby Brea. However, Austin’s David Jones and Stanley Umude combined for key baskets on the next two possessions to stretch the lead back to seven points and effectively seal the game.

Valley’s C.J. Huntley was a persistent force inside, scoring on multiple putbacks and alley-oops to finish with a team-high performance. For Austin, a balanced offensive attack proved overwhelming, with significant contributions from Jones, Umude, Williams and Banks.

The Spurs’ victory completed a two-game road sweep of the Suns, having also won in Tempe 102-91 this past Sunday. Austin’s offense, which has been potent all season, executed efficiently down the stretch, shooting a high percentage in the second half to keep the Suns at bay.

The game’s projected final score by Interstat’s simulator was Austin 123, Valley 100, with the analytics system giving the Spurs a 71.1% probability to win. Austin’s performance, particularly in the second half, aligned with those expectations as they controlled the tempo and capitalized on scoring opportunities.

Austin returns home to face the Stockton Kings on Thursday. Valley continues its homestand Friday against the Delaware Blue Coats.
