Mexico City vs. South Bay
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (Interstat) — The Mexico City Capitanes used a dominant third-quarter surge to pull away from the South Bay Lakers and secure a 123-113 victory in a G League contest Thursday night at the UCLA Health Training Center.
The game, which saw 10 lead changes and was tied on six occasions through the first half, was decisively swung by a blistering Mexico City offensive outburst after halftime. The Capitanes erupted for 36 points in the third quarter, turning a narrow 55-49 halftime lead into a commanding 91-83 advantage heading into the final period.
Mexico City’s backcourt orchestrated the victory. Point guard Ahmad Caver facilitated the offense with precision, while shooting guard Boo Buie and small forward James Bouknight provided consistent scoring punch. The trio’s combined efforts helped Mexico City withstand several South Bay rallies and maintain a double-digit lead for much of the fourth quarter.
South Bay, which entered the game with a 60.6% win probability according to Interstat’s ELO system, was led by the backcourt duo of Nick Smith and Chris Manon. Smith’s playmaking and Manon’s scoring kept the Lakers within striking distance, particularly during a second-quarter push where they trimmed a 14-point deficit to just six by halftime. Center Kylor Kelley provided an interior presence with several dunks and defensive plays.
Despite the Lakers’ efforts, Mexico City’s offensive execution proved too much. The Capitanes consistently answered South Bay baskets with timely scores, often from beyond the arc, to prevent any sustained comeback. A key sequence late in the third quarter saw Mexico City score on consecutive possessions to extend its lead after South Bay had closed to within two points.
The win improved Mexico City’s season record to 17 wins and 11 losses, solidifying its position in the Western Conference standings. South Bay fell to 12-13 with the loss.
The two teams are scheduled for a quick rematch at the same venue on Saturday night. Mexico City will then embark on a road trip to face the Iowa Wolves on Jan. 27, while South Bay remains home to host the College Park Skyhawks on the same date.
The most important part of the game was Mexico City’s decisive 36-point third quarter. After a competitive first half where South Bay repeatedly closed gaps, the Capitanes’ offensive explosion created a separation that the Lakers could not overcome. This period featured a high-paced, efficient scoring display that shifted the game’s momentum permanently in Mexico City’s favor and established the cushion needed to secure the road victory.
