Mexico City vs. South Bay
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (Interstat) — A surging Mexico City Capitanes squad aims to rebound from a rare stumble when they visit the South Bay Lakers in a G League matchup on Thursday night at the UCLA Health Training Center.
The Capitanes (15-11) had won eight consecutive games before a decisive 115-96 home loss to San Diego on Sunday. They now face a South Bay team (12-11) looking to build momentum after a narrow 126-121 road loss to Rio Grande Valley on Saturday.
All eyes will be on Mexico City forward Andersson Garcia, who is in the midst of a dominant stretch. Over his last 10 games, Garcia has averaged a double-double, including a monstrous 21-rebound, 12-point performance in Sunday’s defeat. His recent run features four games with at least 18 rebounds, establishing him as a relentless force on the glass.
South Bay will counter with guard R.J. Davis, who is coming off a stellar all-around performance of 27 points, seven rebounds and eight assists in the overtime loss. Davis has scored 27 or more points in two of his last three outings, providing a consistent offensive spark for the Lakers.
The teams have followed different trajectories recently. Prior to Sunday’s loss, Mexico City’s winning streak included several high-scoring victories, such as a 139-102 rout of Rio Grande Valley on Jan. 14. South Bay has been more inconsistent, alternating wins and losses but remaining competitive in close games, with three of their last five defeats coming by four points or fewer.
This contest is the first of a brief two-game set between the clubs at the Lakers’ facility, with a rematch scheduled for Saturday. For Mexico City, it’s a chance to restart a winning rhythm. For South Bay, it’s an opportunity to even their season record and gain ground in the standings against a team directly above them.
Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. PST.
