South Bay vs. Rio Grande Valley

EDINBURG, Texas (Interstat) — In a high-octane G League showdown defined by a massive third-quarter surge, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers outlasted the South Bay Lakers 126-121 on Saturday night at Bert Ogden Arena.

The game turned decisively in the third period. After trailing 63-53 at halftime, the Vipers erupted for 39 points while holding South Bay to 30, flipping a 10-point deficit into a 92-83 lead heading into the final frame. The Vipers’ offense, which had sputtered at times in the first half, found a relentless rhythm, attacking the basket and capitalizing on Lakers turnovers to build momentum they would not relinquish.

South Bay, the visiting team, had controlled the early action with efficient scoring, posting 30 points in the first quarter and 33 in the second. Guard R.J. Davis orchestrated the offense, connecting from deep and setting up teammates. However, the Lakers’ ball security deteriorated after halftime, leading to a series of costly turnovers that fueled the Vipers’ transition game.

Rio Grande Valley forward Isaiah Crawford was instrumental in the comeback, providing consistent scoring and active defense. His ability to finish at the rim and from beyond the arc keyed the third-quarter run. Point guard Daishen Nix facilitated the offense, particularly during the pivotal period, dishing assists and managing the game as the Vipers seized control.

The Lakers refused to fade in the fourth quarter, closing the gap to a single possession on multiple occasions. A driving layup by Augustas Marciulionis cut the Vipers’ lead to 119-118 with just over four minutes remaining. Crawford answered immediately with a layup and a free throw to push the lead back to four.

South Bay had a chance to tie in the final 30 seconds, but a critical turnover and subsequent fouls sent Rio Grande Valley to the free-throw line to secure the victory. The Vipers sealed the game at the stripe, with John Knight and Daishen Nix making key free throws in the closing moments.

With the win, Rio Grande Valley improved its season record to 13-12, while South Bay fell to 12-11. The two teams are scheduled for a quick rematch at Bert Ogden Arena on Tuesday.

The contest lived up to its pregame projection as a close affair, with statistical models favoring the Vipers. The decisive third-quarter swing, powered by Crawford and Nix, proved to be the difference in a game that featured 15 lead changes and 10 ties before Rio Grande Valley pulled away late.
