South Bay vs. Rio Grande Valley

SOUTH BAY LAKERS (12-10) AT RIO GRANDE VALLEY VIPERS (12-12)

Preview

EDINBURG, Texas (Interstat) — Two teams hovering around .500 will meet when the South Bay Lakers visit the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in a G League matchup Saturday at Bert Ogden Arena.

The Lakers (12-10) enter on a high note after a 120-115 home victory over San Diego on Wednesday. Forward Drew Timme powered that win with 31 points and 11 rebounds, continuing a dominant stretch. Over his last four games, Timme is averaging 24.3 points and 9.0 rebounds while shooting efficiently, establishing himself as South Bay’s primary offensive force.

Rio Grande Valley (12-12) looks to rebound from a difficult two-game road sweep at Mexico City, where it lost by an average of 31 points. Guard Daishen Nix remains the Vipers’ consistent engine, coming off a 22-point, 7-rebound performance in the most recent loss. Nix has recorded a double-double in points and assists in three of his last ten games, showcasing his all-around playmaking.

South Bay has won three of its last five, with all victories coming at home. The Lakers have struggled on the road recently, dropping consecutive games at Austin on Jan. 9-10. Rio Grande Valley has split its last six contests but has been strong at home, winning three straight in Edinburg, including a pair over Greensboro last weekend.

The matchup between Timme’s interior scoring and Nix’s perimeter orchestration will be pivotal. South Bay will aim to control the tempo and exploit Timme’s recent form, while the Vipers will rely on Nix to catalyze their offense and bounce back from a pair of defensive lapses.

The teams will meet again in Edinburg just three days later on Tuesday, Jan. 20, adding immediate stakes to this weekend’s contest as they jockey for position in the Western Conference standings.
