Valley vs. Salt Lake City
SALT LAKE CITY (Interstat) — The Salt Lake City Stars used a historic second-quarter explosion to overcome an early deficit and defeat the Valley Suns 141-125 in a G League game Tuesday night at Bruin Arena.
The Stars, who lead the league in wins, improved to 12-2. The Suns fell to 3-11 with their second consecutive loss in Salt Lake City in as many nights.
The game turned decisively in a breathtaking second period. After trailing 35-23 at the end of the first quarter, the Stars unleashed a 47-point offensive barrage in the second quarter, completely flipping the game. Salt Lake City outscored Valley by 26 points in the frame, taking a 70-56 lead into halftime. The 47-point quarter represented the most pivotal stretch of the contest, as the Suns could not recover from the sudden shift in momentum despite scoring 69 points in the second half.
Valley’s C.J. Huntley, a center from Huntersville, North Carolina, was instrumental in his team’s strong start, connecting on multiple early 3-pointers. However, the Stars’ depth and defensive adjustments, particularly rim protection, overwhelmed the Suns as the game progressed.
Salt Lake City’s offense was a balanced and efficient machine, led by its frontcourt. Mohamed Bamba, the 7-foot center, anchored both ends with a disruptive presence that included multiple blocks and dunks. Oscar Tshiebwe provided relentless energy on the offensive glass, creating numerous second-chance opportunities.
The Stars’ backcourt facilitated the onslaught. E.J. Harkless orchestrated the offense with timely drives and distribution, while Sean East managed the game effectively and contributed key baskets. John Tonje, a small forward from Omaha, Nebraska, caught fire from beyond the arc, hitting several critical 3-pointers during the team’s defining runs.
For Valley, point guard Damion Baugh led the backcourt effort with penetration and playmaking, and shooting guard Jaden Shackelford provided scoring punch. Despite their efforts, the Suns could not contain Salt Lake City’s multifaceted attack or match its 48 percent shooting from the floor over the final three quarters.
The victory solidified Salt Lake City’s position atop the league standings, while Valley continues to search for consistency during a difficult opening stretch of the season. The Stars next play at home against Memphis on Dec. 31. The Suns travel to face Memphis on Dec. 27.
