Valley vs. Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY (Interstat) — The surging Salt Lake City Stars will look to continue their dominant start to the G League season when they host the struggling Valley Suns on Tuesday night at Bruin Arena.

The Stars (10-2) enter with the league’s best record and are coming off a historic 174-146 road victory over Rip City on Dec. 11, a game in which they set a franchise scoring record. The Suns (3-9) have lost nine of their last 10, though they are coming off a 121-118 home win over San Diego last Thursday.

Salt Lake City, which defeated Valley 137-125 just one day prior to this preview, is a heavy favorite. Interstat’s ELO system projects the Stars with a 90.2% probability to win.

The matchup features a compelling duel at center between two of the league’s top rebounders. Valley’s Khaman Maluach is averaging 20.5 points and 16.5 rebounds over his last two games, including a 22-point, 19-rebound, 4-block performance in the win over San Diego. For Salt Lake City, Oscar Tshiebwe is a double-double machine, coming off a 20-point, 22-rebound outing in the record-setting win. He has recorded a double-double in five consecutive games.

The Stars’ offense has been explosive, averaging 138.3 points in their last three contests. Beyond Tshiebwe, guard E.J. Harkless dropped 34 points in the last game. Valley’s recent success has relied heavily on Maluach and the backcourt duo of Damion Baugh (23 points, 11 rebounds, 8 assists vs. San Diego) and JaQuori McLaughlin (18 points, 9 assists).

Following this contest, the Stars will host Memphis on New Year’s Eve. The Suns continue a road trip at Memphis on Dec. 27.

Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. MST Tuesday.
