Cancun vs Club Jaiba Brava

CANCÚN, Mexico (Interstat) — Substitute Oliver Pérez provided a goal and an assist off the bench to propel Club Jaiba Brava to a 2-1 comeback victory over Cancun in a contentious Liga de Expansión MX match on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2026, at Estadio Olímpico Andrés Quintana Roo.

The result, which defied pregame statistical projections, completed a season sweep for Jaiba Brava over Cancun and injected momentum into the visitor’s campaign.

The home side, Cancun, entered the match as a significant favorite according to Interstat’s ELO system, which gave them a 69.2 percent probability to win. The game simulator had predicted a 1-1 draw. Instead, Jaiba Brava showcased resilience, overcoming an early deficit and a hostile environment to secure three points.

Cancun struck first, capitalizing on a fast start. In the sixth minute, forward José Rodríguez finished a play to give the home team an early 1-0 lead. The assist came from the newly introduced substitute Oliver Pérez, who had made an immediate impact after entering the match.

The game’s complexion shifted dramatically just before the half-hour mark. Pérez, now fully involved, turned from provider to scorer. He netted the equalizer in the 28th minute, assisted by defender Rodrigo Reyes, leveling the score at 1-1 and silencing the home crowd.

The contest grew increasingly fractious as the score tightened. The first half featured a flurry of yellow cards, with four issued between the 32nd and 42nd minutes, including one to Pérez. The tension continued after halftime, with three more cautions by the 63rd minute.

A critical turning point arrived in the 68th minute. Cancun defender Even Padilla, who had received a yellow card in the 57th minute, was shown a second yellow, resulting in a red card and forcing his team to play a man down for the final 22 minutes plus stoppage time.

Jaiba Brava quickly exploited the numerical advantage. Just two minutes after the dismissal, another substitute, Diego García, became the hero. He scored the decisive goal in the 70th minute, with the assist credited to midfielder Gipson Preciado, to put the visitors ahead 2-1.

Cancun, reduced to 10 men, could not muster an equalizer despite pushing forward in the latter stages. The match concluded with a total of nine yellow cards and the one pivotal red card issued to Padilla.

With the win, Club Jaiba Brava improved its season record in the Liga de Expansión MX to 11 wins, 4 losses and 7 draws. The team has now won two of its last three matches. Cancun’s record in the competition fell to 14 wins, 7 losses and 8 draws, snapping a two-game winning streak.

The victory also marked Jaiba Brava’s second consecutive win over Cancun this season, following a 2-1 home victory on Sept. 20, 2025.

Club Jaiba Brava will look to build on this result when it hosts Dorados on Sunday, March 8. Cancun, seeking to rebound, faces a quick turnaround with a road match against Cimarrones de Sonora on Sunday, March 1.
