Dender vs Sint-Truiden
SINT-TRUIDEN, Belgium (Interstat) — Visiting Sint-Truiden delivered a commanding and surprising offensive display Saturday, routing Dender 4-1 at the DENDER Football Complex in Denderleeuw to open the Belgian First Division A season.
The match, which kicked off the 2025-26 domestic campaign for both clubs, defied pregame projections. Interstat’s game simulator had forecast a 1-1 draw, while its ELO rating system gave Sint-Truiden only a 56.3 percent probability of victory. The final scoreline proved a stark departure from those expectations.
Sint-Truiden seized control from the opening whistle and never relented. Defender Noah Mbamba set the tone for the visitors, scoring a stunning goal just 60 seconds into the match to immediately silence the home supporters. Mbamba’s early strike established a tempo that Dender struggled to match throughout the first half.
The visitors doubled their lead in the 24th minute through substitute Ilias Sebaoui. Ten minutes later, another substitute, Ryōtarō Itō, found the net to extend the advantage to 3-0 before halftime, effectively putting the game out of reach for a reeling Dender side.
Any notion of a home team comeback was extinguished in the 67th minute when Sint-Truiden’s third substitute to score, Rihito Yamamoto, netted the team’s fourth goal. Dender managed a late consolation score in the 87th minute via Arbnor Muja, also a substitute, but it did little to alter the dominant narrative of the match.
Mbamba was instrumental beyond his opening-minute goal, also contributing an assist to complete a standout performance from his defensive position. Midfielder Malcolm Viltard and defender Luc De Fougerolles each registered an assist for Sint-Truiden.
The match was not without its disciplinary moments. Mbamba received a yellow card in the 58th minute, followed by Viltard in the 62nd. De Fougerolles was also booked in the 86th minute for the visitors.
The result immediately separates the teams in the early league table. Sint-Truiden begins its First Division A season with a 1-0 record, while Dender starts 0-1. The records are identical across all competitions for both clubs.
Sint-Truiden’s depth proved decisive, with four of its five listed goal contributors entering the match as substitutes, showcasing a potent bench that overwhelmed Dender in the second half. The comprehensive victory on the road provides a significant boost of momentum for Sint-Truiden as it looks to build on this performance in the weeks ahead. For Dender, the lopsided home defeat presents an immediate challenge to address defensive vulnerabilities before its next fixture.
