Nigeria vs DR Congo
ABUJA, Nigeria (Interstat) — Two of global football’s hottest teams will put perfect records on the line Sunday when Nigeria hosts DR Congo in a World Cup qualifier.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria (2-0-0, WCQ; 3-0-1 overall) are riding high after a 4-1 rout of Gabon on Thursday. Their potent attack has produced eight goals in their last two matches. DR Congo (3-0-0, WCQ; 3-0-0 overall), however, has been a model of defensive efficiency, earning three consecutive 1-0 victories, including a win at Cameroon also on Thursday.
This clash of styles sets the stage for a pivotal match in the race for a World Cup berth. Nigeria’s firepower, demonstrated in their recent wins, will be tested by a disciplined Congolese side that has proven difficult to break down.
Despite Nigeria’s home-field advantage at Abuja National Stadium, statistical analysis from Interstat projects a narrow 1-0 victory for the visiting Congolese. The Leopards have shown a knack for grinding out results, a trend they will look to continue against a Nigerian squad that was held to a scoreless draw by Lesotho in October.
Following this match, both teams will turn their focus to the Africa Cup of Nations in December. DR Congo faces a tough group stage with matches against Benin, Senegal and Botswana, while Nigeria’s next scheduled match is a qualifier at Uganda on Dec. 30.
Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. local time.
