Buriram Utd vs Gangwon
BURIRAM, Thailand (Interstat) — In a dramatic and physical contest that defied pregame projections, Buriram United and South Korea’s Gangwon FC played to a 2-2 draw in AFC Champions League group stage action Tuesday night at a rain-slicked Chang Arena.
The match, which saw all four goals scored in a frantic 32-minute second-half span, ended with both clubs earning their first point of the continental campaign. The result left the teams level in the early group standings.
The game unfolded in stark contrast to statistical forecasts. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 2-0 victory for the Thai powerhouse, while its ELO rating system gave Buriram United a 52.3 percent probability of securing all three points at home. Instead, Gangwon showcased resilience to twice fight back from a deficit on the road.
The first half was a cagey, contentious affair, more notable for fouls than fluid play. Gangwon’s Park Hoyoung and Kim Daewon were each shown yellow cards in the opening 22 minutes, setting a combative tone. Buriram United midfielder Kenny Dougall also entered the referee’s book before the break.
The deadlock was broken eight minutes into the second half. Gangwon substitute Mo Jaehyeon, who had entered the match at halftime, provided an immediate impact by firing his team into a surprising lead in the 53rd minute.
The visitors’ advantage was short-lived. Just five minutes later, Buriram United drew level. Defender Ko Myeongseok rose highest to powerfully head home a corner kick delivered by Dougall, marking a key contribution from the Australian midfielder.
Buriram United then seized momentum and the lead in the 65th minute. Star forward Suphanat Mueanta cut in from the left flank and finished clinically, assisted by teammate Bissoli, to send the home crowd into a frenzy and seemingly put his side on course for the predicted victory.
Gangwon, however, had a final answer. The pivotal performance of the night came from another second-half substitute, Kim Daewon. After assisting on Mo Jaehyeon’s opener, Kim completed his influential cameo by scoring the decisive equalizer in the 83rd minute. He was set up by fellow substitute Kang Yungu, whose entrance also resulted in a yellow card, underscoring the match’s fiercely competitive nature.
The frantic scoring sequence was bracketed by additional cautions for Buriram’s Bissoli and Gangwon’s Kang, as the referee issued seven yellow cards in total.
The draw leaves both teams seeking their first win of the tournament. Buriram United will look to convert its home dominance into a full three points in its next outing, while Gangwon will take confidence from a hard-fought road result against one of the region’s more formidable sides. The result sets up a tight race for knockout stage qualification as group play continues.
