Baylor at Arizona
TUCSON, Ariz. (Interstat) — The Arizona Wildcats erupted for 20 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to turn a close game into a rout, defeating the Baylor Bears 41-17 on Saturday afternoon at Arizona Stadium.
The Bears started with explosive efficiency, needing just over three minutes to cover 75 yards on their opening drive. Sawyer Robertson capped the series with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Josh Cameron. After forcing an Arizona punt, Baylor quickly struck again. Robertson finished a methodical 12-play, 75-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run on a quarterback sneak, a play that was upheld upon automatic review, giving the Bears a surprising 14-0 lead late in the first quarter.
Arizona responded immediately, embarking on a 10-play, 75-yard drive of its own. Kedrick Reescano punched in a 2-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 14-7. The Wildcats then began to seize momentum in the second quarter. Quarterback Noah Fifita engineered another long drive, culminating in a 2-yard touchdown pass to Kris Hutson, tying the game at 14-14.
Baylor had a chance to reclaim the lead before halftime, driving deep into Arizona territory, but a 48-yard field goal attempt by Connor Hawkins was no good. The Bears got the ball back just before the half and managed a 48-yard field goal from Hawkins as time expired to take a 17-14 lead into the break.
The second half belonged entirely to the Wildcats. They took their first lead of the game on their opening drive of the third quarter, with Reescano scoring his second touchdown from 1 yard out to make it 21-17. The game remained a one-score contest until the fourth quarter, when Arizona’s defense took over.
The turning point came early in the final period. Baylor, driving into Arizona territory, saw Robertson’s pass intercepted in the end zone by Treydan Stukes for a touchback. The Wildcats capitalized on the shift in fortune, with Ismail Mahdi breaking free for a 28-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 28-17.
On Baylor’s ensuing possession, the game was put out of reach when Robertson’s pass was intercepted by linebacker Jabari Mann, who returned it 34 yards for a touchdown. The defensive score pushed the Arizona lead to 35-17. Just over a minute later, another Robertson interception led to a pick-six, this one by Mann for 34 yards, sealing the 41-17 victory.
Arizona’s defense was the story, forcing three turnovers and recording multiple sacks. Safety Dalton Johnson led all players with 18 tackles, while Genesis Smith added 16. The Wildcats’ offense was balanced, with Mahdi rushing for 93 yards and a touchdown, and Hutson catching nine passes for 133 yards and a score. Fifita finished 14 of 25 for 183 yards with one touchdown and one interception, adding 33 yards on the ground.
For Baylor, Caden Knighten rushed for 100 yards on 17 carries, but the Bears’ offense stalled after the first quarter. Robertson completed 22 of 33 passes for 162 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions.
The win improves Arizona’s record to 8-3, while Baylor falls to 5-6. The Wildcats will travel to face rival Arizona State on Friday. Baylor will host Houston next Saturday.
