Arizona Routs Baylor Behind Dominant Second Half

TUCSON, Ariz. (Interstat) — The Arizona Wildcats erupted for 20 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to turn a close contest into a rout, defeating the Baylor Bears 41 to 17 on Saturday afternoon at Arizona Stadium.

The game, played in front of a raucous home crowd, saw the Wildcats improve their record to eight wins and three losses, solidifying a successful season. Baylor, meanwhile, saw its record fall to five wins and six losses, leaving its postseason hopes in jeopardy.

The contest began as a shootout, with Baylor striking first and fast. The Bears needed just over three minutes to find the end zone on their opening drive, capping it with a 9-yard touchdown pass from Sawyer Robertson to Josh Cameron.

After forcing an Arizona punt, Baylor’s offense marched down the field again. A methodical 14-play, 75-yard drive was finished by Robertson himself, who powered into the end zone on a 2-yard run. The score, confirmed after an automatic review, gave the Bears a stunning 14-point lead with 40 seconds remaining in the opening quarter.

Arizona responded immediately, embarking on a drive that bridged the first and second quarters. The Wildcats methodically moved the ball 82 yards, with quarterback Noah Fifita connecting with his favorite target, Kris Hutson, on a 2-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to seven.

Baylor had a chance to extend its lead before halftime, driving deep into Arizona territory, but a 48-yard field goal attempt by Connor Hawkins sailed wide. The Bears got the ball back just before the half and managed a 48-yard field goal from Hawkins as time expired to take a 17 to 14 lead into the break.

The second half belonged entirely to the Wildcats. Arizona took the opening kickoff of the third quarter and engineered a 13-play, 75-yard touchdown drive. Kedrick Reescano punched it in from one yard out, giving Arizona its first lead of the afternoon at 21 to 17.

The game remained a one-score affair until the floodgates opened in the final period. The turning point came early in the fourth quarter when Baylor, still within striking distance, was driving in Arizona territory. Robertson’s pass intended for Cameron was intercepted by Treydan Stukes in the end zone for a touchback.

Arizona capitalized on the momentum shift. Just three plays later, running back Ismail Mahdi broke free for a 28-yard touchdown run, extending the Wildcats’ lead to 28 to 17.

The Baylor offense, which had moved the ball effectively in the first half, completely stalled. On the ensuing possession, Robertson was intercepted again, this time by linebacker Jabari Mann, who returned the pick 34 yards for a defensive touchdown, effectively sealing the game for Arizona at 35 to 17.

The Wildcats added another score late in the quarter on a 19-yard touchdown run by Reescano, his third of the game, to provide the final margin of victory.

Statistically, the game was a tale of two halves and was dominated by Arizona’s defensive stand in the final two quarters. Baylor’s Robertson finished the game 22 of 33 for 162 yards with one touchdown and two critical interceptions. Running back Caden Knighten was a bright spot for the Bears, rushing for 100 yards on 17 carries.

For Arizona, Fifita managed the game effectively, completing 14 of 25 passes for 183 yards and one touchdown while adding 33 yards on the ground. Hutson was his primary receiver, hauling in nine catches for 133 yards and a score. The Wildcats’ ground game was potent, with Mahdi rushing for 93 yards and a touchdown and Reescano adding 46 yards and three scores.

Defensively, Arizona was led by a massive performance from safety Dalton Johnson, who recorded 18 tackles. Safety Genesis Smith added 16 tackles and a forced fumble, while linebacker Taye Brown tallied 10 tackles and 1.5 sacks. Mann’s game-sealing interception return for a touchdown capped a strong individual performance that also included six tackles.

The victory sets up a crucial season finale for Arizona, which will travel to face in-state rival Arizona State next Friday. Baylor will return home to face Houston next Saturday, needing a win to become bowl-eligible. The final score of 58 points fell under the betting over/under line of 62.5, and the result was an upset according to the pregame spread, which had installed Baylor as a 6.5-point favorite.
