Wofford at Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C. (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive stands and a dramatic final drive, the Wofford Terriers held off a second-half rally by The Citadel Bulldogs to secure a 16-14 victory on Saturday at Johnson Hagood Stadium.

The Terriers built a two-score lead through three quarters, but had to rely on a game-sealing interception from defensive back Eli Campbell with under two minutes to play to clinch the win and improve their season record to 5-6. The loss dropped The Citadel to 4-7.

Wofford established control early with a methodical opening drive. Quarterback J.T. Fayard, a 6-foot-5, 220-pound sophomore from Katy, Texas, engineered a 15-play march that culminated in an 11-yard touchdown pass to C.J. Adams. The Terriers’ two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the score at 6-0.

The first half was a story of missed opportunities for both teams, but especially for the Bulldogs, who drove deep into Wofford territory on multiple occasions only to come away empty-handed. A critical fourth-down stop by the Terriers’ defense at their own 4-yard line late in the second quarter preserved their lead. Wofford then drove down the field in the closing seconds of the half, setting up a 29-yard field goal by Sam Spence of Florence, South Carolina, to take a 9-0 lead into the break.

The Citadel’s offense, which had been stymied for the first 30 minutes, found its rhythm in the third quarter. The Bulldogs cut into the deficit with a 34-yard touchdown strike from quarterback Quentin Hayes to Jihad Marks, making the score 9-7. Hayes, from Enterprise, Alabama, was a dual threat, passing for 153 yards and a touchdown while also leading his team in rushing with 78 yards on the ground.

Wofford responded early in the fourth quarter, extending its lead after a lengthy drive was capped by a 2-yard touchdown plunge from running back Gerald Modest. The score gave the Terriers a 16-7 cushion with just under 15 minutes to play.

The Bulldogs answered with a determined drive of their own. Hayes orchestrated a 13-play, 75-yard march that he finished himself with an 11-yard touchdown run, pulling The Citadel to within two points at 16-14 with 5:08 remaining.

After a quick stop by their defense, the Bulldogs got the ball back with a chance to drive for a potential game-winning score. Hayes moved the offense into Wofford territory, but with 1:42 left on the clock, his pass over the middle was intercepted by Campbell at the Wofford 21-yard line, effectively ending The Citadel’s comeback hopes.

The Terriers’ offense was led by Modest, who rushed for 99 yards and a touchdown, and Fayard, who completed 18 of 34 passes for 210 yards and a score. The win defied the pregame projections, as Interstat’s game simulator had forecast a 27-22 victory for The Citadel, which entered the game as a 4.5-point favorite.

Wofford will look to close its season with a winning record when it hosts Chattanooga next Saturday. The Citadel will travel to face East Tennessee State in its season finale.
