Wofford holds off Citadel rally for 16‑14 road victory

CHARLESTON, S.C. (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive stands and a dramatic fourth-quarter rally that fell just short, the Wofford Terriers held off The Citadel Bulldogs 16-14 on a cool Saturday evening at Johnson Hagood Stadium.

Wofford, now 5-6, built a 9-0 lead through the first half and extended it to 16-0 early in the fourth quarter before The Citadel mounted a furious comeback. The Bulldogs, falling to 4-7, scored two touchdowns in the final period but could not complete the comeback, with their final drive ending on an interception with under two minutes to play.

The game unfolded in a starkly different manner than pregame projections, which had favored The Citadel by 4.5 points and predicted a higher-scoring affair. The combined 30 points fell well below the over/under line of 45.5, underscoring the defensive struggle that characterized much of the contest.

Wofford set the tone on its opening possession, marching methodically down the field. Quarterback J.T. Fayard, a 6-foot-5, 220-pound junior from Katy, Texas, connected with Terrance Honeywood for a 39-yard gain on the game’s first play from scrimmage. Fayard capped the drive with an 11-yard touchdown pass to C.J. Adams. A failed two-point conversion left the Terriers with a 6-0 lead less than five minutes into the game.

The Terriers’ defense then took over, repeatedly stifling The Citadel’s option attack. The Bulldogs’ deepest first-half penetration reached the Wofford 10-yard line, but the drive ended on a turnover on downs when Quentin Hayes’ fourth-down pass fell incomplete in the end zone.

Wofford added to its lead just before halftime. A drive keyed by a 28-yard rush from Gerald Modest positioned the Terriers for a 29-yard field goal by Sam Spence of Florence, South Carolina, with 23 seconds remaining in the second quarter, sending the teams to the locker rooms with Wofford leading 9-0.

The Bulldogs emerged from halftime with renewed energy. After a long kickoff return by Braylon Knauth set them up near midfield, they finally cracked the scoreboard late in the third quarter. Hayes found a streaking Jihad Marks for a 34-yard touchdown pass, cutting the deficit to 9-7 and injecting life into the home crowd.

Wofford responded immediately, embarking on a marathon 14-play, 80-yard drive that consumed over seven minutes of clock. The drive was kept alive by a critical pass interference penalty in the end zone on a third-down play. Modest, a powerful running back from Miami, Florida, finished the drive with a 2-yard touchdown plunge up the middle on the first play of the fourth quarter. Spence’s extra point gave Wofford a 16-7 cushion.

The Citadel answered with a touchdown drive of its own. Hayes engineered an 11-play, 75-yard march, culminating in an 11-yard touchdown run by the quarterback himself with 5:08 remaining in the game. The score, followed by the extra point, brought the Bulldogs to within two points at 16-14.

After forcing a Wofford punt, The Citadel took over at its own 32-yard line with 4:05 on the clock, needing only a field goal to win. Hayes quickly moved the Bulldogs into Wofford territory with a 19-yard completion to Javonte Graves-Billips. The drive appeared to be building momentum, but on a second-down play from the Wofford 30, Hayes’ pass over the middle was intercepted by Wofford defensive back Eli Campbell of Sanford, Florida, at the Terriers’ 21-yard line with 1:42 remaining.

The Citadel, holding all three of its timeouts, forced a Wofford punt, but got the ball back at its own 32 with only 14 seconds left and no timeouts. Hayes’ final pass attempt fell incomplete, sealing the victory for the visiting Terriers.

Statistically, the game was a battle of contrasting offenses. Wofford’s Fayard completed 18 of 34 passes for 210 yards and one touchdown. The ground game was led by Modest, who racked up 99 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, adding 30 receiving yards. Ihson Jackson-Anderson contributed 46 rushing yards on 14 attempts.

For The Citadel, Hayes was a dual threat, completing 12 of 19 passes for 153 yards, one touchdown and one interception, while also leading the team in rushing with 78 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries. Marks was the primary receiving threat, hauling in three passes for 107 yards and the long third-quarter touchdown.

Wofford will look to secure a winning season when it hosts Chattanooga next Saturday. The Citadel will travel to face East Tennessee State, also next Saturday, in its season finale.

The victory gives Wofford a winning record within the Southern Conference and provides a positive conclusion to its road schedule, while The Citadel was left to ponder a season of narrow defeats, with this two-point loss adding to a collection of close games that have defined their challenging year.
