Georgetown shuts out Fordham for first home win

WASHINGTON (Interstat) — Georgetown’s defense delivered a dominant shutout performance, and quarterback Dez Thomas II accounted for two touchdowns as the Hoyas defeated Fordham 14-0 on Saturday at Cooper Field.

The Hoyas improved to 6-5 on the season, while the Rams fell to 1-10.

Georgetown’s defense was the story of the game, consistently stifling Fordham’s offense. The Hoyas recorded multiple sacks, with pressure coming from linemen like Dean Mangiocavallo and John Caramanico, and the secondary was equally disruptive. Cornerback Quincy Briggs secured a crucial interception in the second quarter, and the unit as a whole held Fordham to a paltry 11 net rushing yards.

The Hoyas set the tone early with a methodical 11-play, 67-yard drive that consumed nearly six minutes of the first quarter. The series was capped by an 11-yard touchdown pass from Thomas to versatile receiver Hassan Mahasin. Thomas Anderson’s extra point gave Georgetown a 7-0 lead with 2:05 remaining in the opening period.

Georgetown doubled its advantage in the second quarter. After a Fordham drive stalled, a poor punt set the Hoyas up with excellent field position at the Rams 33. Thomas engineered another scoring drive, finishing it with a 10-yard touchdown strike to tight end Conor O’Neil with 4:14 left in the half. Anderson’s second successful point-after made it 14-0.

Fordham’s offense, led by quarterback Gunnar Smith, struggled to find any rhythm against the relentless Georgetown defense. Smith completed 22 of 36 passes for 208 yards but was sacked repeatedly and could not guide the Rams into the end zone. His primary targets were Nodin Tracy, who caught five passes for 65 yards, and Jack Betten, who added four receptions for 65 yards. Running back Yohan-Li Louis was a bright spot in the passing game, catching four balls for 57 yards, but the ground attack was nonexistent.

The Rams’ best chance to score came just before halftime. Smith led a two-minute drill, moving Fordham from its own 26-yard line down to the Georgetown 18. However, with time expiring, a 42-yard field goal attempt by Bennett Henderson sailed wide left, preserving the shutout for the Hoyas.

In the second half, the game became a defensive struggle. Georgetown’s offense, while not adding to its point total, effectively managed the clock behind the running of Savion Hart, who finished with 70 yards on 17 carries, and Jayden Sumpter. Thomas efficiently managed the game, completing 18 of 28 passes for 136 yards and the two scores, while adding 34 yards on the ground.

Fordham’s defense had its moments, including a blocked field goal by N. Lindsey-Gill in the first quarter, but the offense could not capitalize. The Rams’ final drive of the game reached the Georgetown 8-yard line as time expired, but they were unable to crack the scoreboard.

Punting was a lone area of strength for Fordham, as Dominic Sansone averaged 43.4 yards on eight kicks. For Georgetown, punter Josh Leff pinned the Rams deep multiple times, booting six punts for 253 yards.

The victory secures a winning season for the Hoyas, who conclude their regular season next Saturday at Holy Cross. Fordham, mired in a difficult season, will look to end on a high note when it travels to face Merrimack next Saturday.
