Bethune-Cookman at Jackson State

JACKSON, Miss. (Interstat) — Jackson State methodically wore down Bethune-Cookman, scoring a touchdown in every quarter to secure a 28-13 victory on Saturday at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The Tigers improved their record to 8-2, while the Wildcats fell to 5-6.

Jackson State’s ground game proved unstoppable, amassing over 300 rushing yards. The three-pronged attack of running backs Ahmad Miller, Travis Terrell Jr., and Donerio Davenport gashed the Bethune-Cookman defense throughout the contest. Miller, from Memphis, Tennessee, led the way with 118 yards on 22 carries. Terrell Jr., from Atlanta, Georgia, added 103 yards and a touchdown, while Davenport, from Mansfield, Texas, contributed 106 yards and a score.

The game began with an explosive sequence. On just the third play from scrimmage, Jackson State quarterback Jared Lockhart connected with Jameel Gardner Jr. on an 83-yard touchdown pass, giving the Tigers an early lead. Gardner Jr., a wide receiver from Detroit, Michigan, finished with 98 yards on just three receptions.

The Wildcats responded immediately. On the ensuing kickoff, Javon Ross fielded the ball at his own 2-yard line and raced 98 yards for a touchdown, tying the game and momentarily silencing the home crowd. Ross, from DeLand, Florida, was a bright spot for Bethune-Cookman, catching six passes for 58 yards in addition to his special teams heroics.

After the initial fireworks, Jackson State’s defense and rushing attack began to impose their will. The Tigers reclaimed the lead in the second quarter on a 25-yard touchdown run by Terrell Jr. Bethune-Cookman managed to cut the deficit to 14-13 just before halftime on a 37-yard field goal by Juan Dominguez from West Palm Beach, Florida.

The second half belonged entirely to Jackson State. The Tigers extended their lead in the third quarter when Davenport powered in for a 6-yard touchdown. Bethune-Cookman’s offense, led by quarterback Cam’Ron Ransom of Lakeland, Florida, moved the ball at times but could not finish drives in the end zone. Ransom passed for 215 yards and rushed for 69 more, but the Wildcats were held to just two field goals after their opening kickoff return touchdown.

Jackson State sealed the victory in the final seconds when Bethune-Cookman’s desperation attempt to get back into the game backfired. Safety B.J. Washington of Flora, Mississippi, intercepted a pass and returned it 82 yards for a touchdown with 13 seconds remaining.

The Wildcats’ defense was led by an interception from cornerback Matthew McKenzie of West Palm Beach, Florida, and a forced fumble by defensive end Lewon Lurry Jr. of Miami, Florida. Jackson State’s defense also came up with key plays, including interceptions by Kam Sallis of Pickens, Mississippi, and the game-clinching pick-six by Washington.

Jackson State punter Kye Collins of Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, averaged 37.5 yards on four punts, while Bethune-Cookman’s Max Tulen of Melbourne, Victoria, averaged 50.3 yards on six punts.

The game’s final score fell well below the projected over/under total of 58.5 points. Jackson State will look to continue its strong season next Saturday when it travels to face Alcorn State. Bethune-Cookman will conclude its season on the road against Florida A&M.
