Jackson State Routs Bethune-Cookman to Cap Home Schedule
JACKSON, Miss. (Interstat) — Jackson State methodically wore down Bethune-Cookman, scoring a touchdown in each quarter to secure a 28-13 victory on Saturday afternoon at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The Tigers improved their season record to eight wins and two losses, maintaining their strong form in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. The Wildcats fell to five wins and six losses, unable to build on a stunning early special teams play.
The game’s opening minutes were a whirlwind of scoring. Jackson State struck first, needing just two plays after the opening kickoff. Quarterback Jared Lockhart, a Charlotte, North Carolina native, connected with Jameel Gardner Jr. on an 83-yard touchdown pass down the left sideline, giving the Tigers a 7-0 lead just 44 seconds into the contest.
The Wildcats’ response was immediate and electrifying. On the ensuing kickoff, Javon Ross fielded the ball at his own 2-yard line, found a seam and outraced the Jackson State coverage unit for a 98-yard touchdown return. The score was tied at 7 just 14 seconds after the Tigers had taken the lead.
From that point, however, Jackson State’s ground game and defense began to impose their will. The Tigers reclaimed the lead late in the second quarter with a methodical drive capped by a 25-yard touchdown run from Travis Terrell Jr., making the score 14-7.
Bethune-Cookman quarterback Cam’Ron Ransom of Lakeland, Florida, engineered a two-minute drill just before halftime, completing a 45-yard pass to Josh Evans to set up a 37-yard field goal by Juan Dominguez as time expired in the half, cutting the deficit to 14-10.
The Wildcats drew closer with another Dominguez field goal, this time from 32 yards, on their opening drive of the third quarter, narrowing the gap to 14-13. That was as close as they would get.
Jackson State’s powerful rushing attack, led by Ahmad Miller and Donerio Davenport, took over. The Tigers engineered a decisive 11-play, 56-yard drive in the third quarter, all on the ground, culminating in a 6-yard touchdown run by Davenport to extend their lead to 21-13.
The Wildcats had opportunities to answer but were stymied by the Tigers’ defense. A promising drive early in the fourth quarter ended when Ransom was intercepted by Kam Sallis. Bethune-Cookman’s final hope evaporated in the closing seconds when Ransom, pressured and trying to force a play, threw his second interception. Jackson State safety B.J. Washington picked off the pass and returned it 82 yards for a touchdown, sealing the victory with 13 seconds remaining.
Jackson State’s offensive success was built on a dominant rushing performance. The Tigers amassed 331 yards on the ground, with three players eclipsing the 100-yard mark. Miller, from Memphis, Tennessee, carried 22 times for 118 yards. Davenport, of Mansfield, Texas, added 106 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries, while Terrell Jr., from Atlanta, Georgia, rushed for 103 yards and a score on 11 attempts.
Ransom was a dual threat for Bethune-Cookman, completing 15 of 28 passes for 215 yards and rushing for 69 yards on 16 carries. His top target was Javon Ross of DeLand, Florida, who caught six passes for 58 yards. Lorenzo Jenkins of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, added two receptions for 69 yards.
The game’s final score fell well below the pregame over/under line of 58.5, largely due to Jackson State’s ball-control offense and timely defensive stops. The Tigers were also able to cover the pregame spread, having been installed as 24.5-point favorites.
Jackson State will look to continue its winning ways next Saturday when it travels to face rival Alcorn State. Bethune-Cookman will conclude its regular season on the road against Florida A&M.
