Purdue at Washington
SEATTLE (Interstat) — The Washington Huskies delivered a dominant performance on Saturday, overwhelming the Purdue Boilermakers 49-13 at a rain-soaked Husky Stadium.
Washington quarterback Demond Williams Jr., a 5-foot-11, 187-pound sophomore from Chandler, Arizona, was nearly flawless, completing 16 of 19 passes for 257 yards and two touchdowns while adding 23 yards on the ground. His efficiency powered an offense that scored touchdowns on six of its first eight full possessions.
The Huskies seized control with a 21-point second quarter, turning a close game into a rout. After Adam Mohammed scored his second of three rushing touchdowns on a 1-yard plunge early in the quarter to put Washington up 14-7, the floodgates opened. On the ensuing Purdue drive, linebacker Zaydrius Rainey-Sale of Tacoma intercepted a Ryan Browne pass, setting up a spectacular 68-yard touchdown run by Jordan Washington on the very next play, extending the lead to 21-7.
Washington’s defense continued to stifle the Boilermakers, forcing a punt and giving the ball back to Williams Jr. with just over two minutes remaining in the half. He engineered a masterful 11-play, 80-yard drive, capped by Mohammed’s third touchdown with 55 seconds left, sending the Huskies into halftime with a commanding 28-7 advantage.
The onslaught continued after the break. On Washington’s first possession of the third quarter, Williams Jr. connected with Audric Harris on a 61-yard touchdown strike. Later in the quarter, Williams found Dezmen Roebuck for a 2-yard scoring pass, pushing the lead to 42-7.
Purdue’s offense, led by quarterback Malachi Singleton, struggled to sustain drives against a relentless Washington defense. Singleton, from Kennesaw, Georgia, finished 16 of 28 for 150 yards and a late touchdown, adding 22 rushing yards. The Boilermakers managed only a pair of field goals from Spencer Porath, from 41 and 53 yards, in the second half before Singleton found EJ Horton Jr. for a 9-yard touchdown pass with 7:11 remaining in the game.
Washington’s backup quarterback, Kai Horton of Carthage, Texas, added a final exclamation point with a 2-yard rushing touchdown in the closing minutes.
Mohammed was a versatile weapon for the Huskies, rushing for 59 yards and three touchdowns while also catching a 27-yard pass. Jordan Washington amassed 108 rushing yards and a touchdown on just five carries, highlighted by his long second-quarter score. Decker DeGraaf led all receivers with 91 yards on five catches.
Defensively, the Huskies were led by linebackers Deven Bryant and Xe’ree Alexander, who each recorded eight tackles. The unit also recorded four sacks and an interception.
With the victory, Washington improves its record to 7-3 on the season, while Purdue falls to 2-9. The Huskies travel to face UCLA next Saturday, while the Boilermakers host Indiana on Nov. 28.
The final score of 62 total points went under the betting over/under line of 51.5. Purdue had been a 14.5-point underdog pregame.
